Though seals and sea lions are comparatively frequent visitors to the lieacltes around Dunedin, Hie tippearance in these waters of a sea-elepbnnt. whose normal haunts are Hie Kermadees ami other I'ar-distaiV groups ot islands in tlie South Pacific, is something of a rarity. Ou<‘ ot' these giant sea animals was recently to lie seen mi ■i lieaeli near Brighton, where it had been lying for a few days without apparently having made any attempt to return to the sett. A kiwi which was killed by a motorist in tlie Grcymoutli district lias been brought to the Canterbury Museum, and a permit to keep it has been obtained from tlie Department of Internal Affairs, it belongs to the large spotted species, which lias been named after Sir Julius von Haas!:. Tlie director of tlie museum. Mr. It. A. Falla, said that it would be a useful specimen. Ho mentioned Unit during the last fortnight 10 shining cuckoos had been brought into the museum, and telephone reports had been received about many others.
