The Duke Of Hamilton And Brandon (Received March 17. 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, March 16. The death has occurred of the Duke of Hamilton ami Brandon. He will be succeeded by his eldest son. Squadron Jx-.-rder the Marquess of Douglass and Clydesdale, known as the "ligiiting Marquess.” Alfred Douglas Dougliis-Humilton. 13th Duke of Hamilton and 19th Duke ot Brandon, was the premier peer of Scotland. holding the office of hereditary Keeper of Holyrood Palace. He was born in 1862 and succeeded to his titles in 1895. As a young man he served in the Royal Navy. Selma Lagerlof (Received March 17. 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, Marcli 10. The death is announced of tlie Swedish authoress. Selma Lagerlof Selma Lagerlof, one of the most noted writers of the present day. was born in Verinhind in ISSS. The success of her first books, notably “Gosta Borling, published in IS9I. enabled her after 1895 to give up her career as a teacher and devote herself entirely to authorship. Her last book translated into English was her diary, published in 1937. She received many honours, most notable of them lieiii" tlie Nobel Prize in Literature awnrde.l to tier in 1999.
