DEATH OF PIONEER
Mrs. J. Stallworthy More Than 100 Descendants The death has occurred of Airs. Hannah Jane Stallworthy, Aratapu, wife of the late Mr. John Stallworthy, a former ALP. for Kaipara, aged 90. Born in Cornwall, England, in 1849, Airs. Stall worthy arrived in New Zealand with her parents and brothers in 1872 on the ship City of Auckland. One of her brothers, Air. Ivey Keat, was one of the first railway engine drivers in the Auckland district. Alarfied in the Methodist Church, AVhangaroa, in 1873, Mrs. Stallworthy and her husband moved to Auckland a year later, returning to Aratapu in 1880. They were the first white people to be married at AVhangaroa. Airs. Stallworthy had an enviable reputation for her warm hospitality and care for the sick iu the Northern AVairoa district during the pioneering days. Becoming a member of Parliament for Kaipara, her husband was prominent for his efforts for the progress of districts within his constituency. Mr. Stallworthy died in 1923. Airs. Stallworthy, who celebrated her 90th birthday on Christmas Eve last, enjoyed excellent health'and was remarkable for her vigour. She had a fund of memories regarding life in North Auckland in the early days. Descendants of Airs. Stallworthy number more than 100, and include no fewer than nine children, 41 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. One of her sons is Air. A. J. Stallworthy, Epsom, a former AI.P. for Eden, and Minister of Health, and among her grandchildren are Dr. J. A. Stallworthy. Oxford, England, and Dr. K. A. Stallworthy, Auckland.
