GARDEN PARTY

Effort For Army Queen In Plunket Carnival A large number of supporters and friends braved the unsettled weather on Saturday afternoon to be present at the garden party in aid of the Army queen, Miss Patricia Gledhill. in the Plunket Carnival. The beautiful grounds at “Homewood,” Karori, had been generously lent by Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland for the occasion, and although rain somewhat marred the event after lunch, more Ilian 300 people attended, and in spite of the unpleasant conditions, spent an enjoyable time. Many visitors arrived in the morning to spend the day, and while the sun was shining, tennis and swimming were held. Picnic luncheons in the shaded gardens were part of the programme for earlycomers. A crowd of soldiers from Trentham military camp enjoyed a swim in the baths before rain fell heavily. This, however, did not deter a few hardy girls from swimming later on, when the rain was falling in earnest, and they were able to announce that the experience was quite as much fun as if the sun had been out.

The whole of the Army queen’s committee was present, and, with other friends, showed visitors ronnu the wellknown points of interest in the grounds, including the aviaries, conservatories, fernery and glow-worm cave. The tea pavilion did a brisk business all afternoon, and organized games, under the supervision of an energetic group, were held in the large garages. Indoors, funds were augment by a group of bridgoqila.yers, who met at Mrs. Sutherland's invitation to help support the cause.

A group of officers from samp arrived during the afternoon, so- that the occasion had the support of a large section of the Army, as well as that of many friends, whos- desire to support the Plunket cause, and this particular queen, led them to attend what proved to be a happy gathering.
