FIRE IN TOMOANA FREEZING WORKS
Early-morning Blaze UNCOMPLETED BLOCK DESTROYED Dominion Special Service HASTINGS. January 27. Threatening at one *tnge the whole of the freezing works of Nelson's (X.Z.), Ltd., at Toinoaiui. an outbreak of lire in the early hours of this inornjng praeticallv demolished a partly-completed block of building* being erected to provide the extra storage space required for war conditions. Univ the excellent work of two fire brigades averted what would have been a major disaster, as there is at present between £150.000 and £200.000 worth of meat in store at the works. A considerable quantity of meat was damaged when the flames spread from the new structure to the roof of an adjoining freezing chamber. No estimate or the total loss was available today. Fortunately it was possible to carry on with the normal programme of work ihroujhoiit the day. but a serious aspect of the fire is that it has renewed the nossibility of congestion al a later date if shipping space is not available when required.
