CYCLING CHAMPIONS
Wellington Provincial Meeting
CONTINENTAL STYLE RACING The Wellington provincial cycling championships were held at Petone on Saturday, some handicap races also being included in the programme. Included in the championships was a 500-metres sprint, run in heats, quarterfinals, semifinals and match race finals. In this type of event, stated to be popular ou the Continent, two riders compete against each other in each beat. For the first 250 metres they manoeuvre for positions and can do anything at all except remove their hands from lite bars. '1 hey can “throw’’ their back wheel in the path of the opposing rider or adopt other devices for beating him to the inner position. The sprint starts with the last 220 yards, when the man who has started off on the inside must ride parallel with a white line 22 inches in from the edge of the track, allowing just sufficient room for an expert rider to cut through, if he can. While it may be a great attraction on the Continent, it did not arouse any enthusiasm among the public at Petone, and with eight heats, four quarterfinals, two semifinals and two match race finals occupied more’than a fair share of the programme without being a real test of riding ability. In conjunction with the cycling championships the Olympic, Petone and Masterton amateur athletic clubs held a triangular contest, which was won by Masterton. In the 10-mile cycling championship only two men finished out of a field of 14. Three laps of 440 yards separated these two. TOURING CYCLISTS
Brilliant Riding At Dunedin By Telegraph.—Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 28. The two visiting Australian cyclists, J. Walsh (New South Wales) and K. Stewart (Victoria), gave brilliant performances in the second evening meeting held by the Otago centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association on the Caledonian ground on Saturday. The third Australian rider, IL Clayton (Queensland), did not compete, as be was still bruised after his crash on 'Thursday. The five-mile open race was won with ease by Walsh, who finished a lap and a half ahead of I*. Hansen. Otago, and both Walsh and Stewart won their 1000-metre sprint races in impressive style. A strong and gusty south-west wind made conditions for the meeting unpleasant and militated against fast times.
