Murder Plot Reported

NEW YORK, January 25.

The Shanghai correspondent of the United Press reports that the Japanese military spokesman said extraordinary precautions were being taken to assure the safety of the United Stales Ambassador in China, Mr. N. T. Johnson, following the discovery of a Chinese plot to assassinate him in .lapair cse-controlled territory to cause a crisis in the relations between Japan and America. Mr. Johnson is at present aboard the United States gunboat Luzon on the Yangtze. SECOND SCARE WITHIN WEEK (Received January 26,11.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 26.

The Shanghai correspondent of tlie “New York Times,” Mr. Attend, says tlie report on the attempt on Mr. Johnson’s life is the second assassination scare tlie Japanese have started within a week. 'Tlie Japanese on January 19 arrested two Chinese for attempting to purchase a picture of Mr. Johnson. One allegedly admitted that he had been sent to Shanghai by Chinese Communists to murder Mr. Johnson and blame Hie Japanese. The sensational Japanese version is that tlie Chinese were expected to release mines in the Luzon’s path and attack tlie gunboat, from the bank witli artillery and machine-guns. There is considerable comment on tlie fact that no vessel has been mined on tlie Yangtze for over a year but within a week of tlie announcement. of Mr. Johnson’s projected trip tlie Japanese claimed Hint two of their vessels had just been mined.
