THE KITCHEN GARDEN
Sowings To Make In January January is ar good month to make a sowing of turnips, and preferably bn a south border. Drills should be 18 inches apart. Eventually thin out the plants to six inches apart. Where salad onions are appreciated it is advisable to make a further sowing during January, sowing thinly in shallow drills. Any main crop onion seed that'may be on hand will answer this purpose. The final sowing of green peas should be dealt with this month, so as to carry the season of green peas on as long as possible. There are many varieties to choose from, both tall and dwarf. Some gardeners prefer an early variety for the late sowing because it matures rapidly. The dwarf broad beans which grow to a height of about one foot are .suitable for a January sowing, and when given a good position nut lure quickly aud make a rather pleasant change from ordinary vegetables later on. These small beans may be sown fairly close together; keep them growing by continual hoeing and watering, as these are necessary, and the results will probably surprise those who have never grown them so late.
