FRUIT INDUSTRY

Possible Development Of Local Market Dominion Special Service. DUNEDIN, January 4. Mr. Harry Turner, who has for some years past represented the New Zealand fruit industry in Europe, is now connected as manager with overseas sales in the fruit division under the External Marketing Department, lie left Duuddln today and on his way back to Loudon lie intends visiting various centres in the United' States and Canada with a view to investigating new developments in the utilization of .fruit in the form of byproducts. The United States and Canada have both been heavily hit by the limitation of shipping facilities to United Kingdom markets, but the respective Governments are helping to find ways of marketing an extra quantity of the fruit now required to be sold on the local markets. This is being done in a variety- of ways, inclu'ding the production of apple crisps, apple powder, dried apples and fruit juices.

Mr. Turner mentioned that it was hoped it might be possible to develop the industry along these lines in New Zealand. When in Great Britain Mr. Turner intends also to investigate the possibility of further developing the Dominion’s output of kauri gum, in connexion witli which a considerable amount of research and experimental work has been carried out. If this development i/ successful it will have an important bearing upon the kauri gum industry in North Auckland.
