OTAKI RACES

Prospects For Tomorrow

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Catalogue For Melbourne

(By

The Watcher.)

The two open events at the Otaki meeting tomorrow have drawn strong fields, and recent form will be mixed with several fresh prospects. Lucullus Lad, who is topweight in the Ling Memorial, failed to see out a journey both at Wanganui and Foxton, but he was fifth at the latter meeting and might soon be ready to run on a little better. Play On raced creditably at Marton last Saturday and should improve, as also should Dainty Sue, though it is unlikely that either will be at their best just yet. Seasoned.

Tooley Street is a seasoned horse who won over seven at his last start at the Grand National meeting. Since then he has been at Riccarton and more recently at Trentham, where he has done recent strong work. He is also engaged in the seven-furlong event, but while no definite announcement has been made it is probable that he will run in the distance handicap. Tooley Street is a well-sea-soned horse and should run prominently. Trentham Bracket.

Trebor and Boomerang, who will be a bracket, both raced at Foxton, their first outings after a spell, and they made no showing, but Trebor nearly fell six furlongs from home. Form Prospect.

A better form prospect from this stable appears to be Might, who, apart from being seasoned, ran an excellent race into fourth place at Foxton after getting very badly away. He also likes the Otaki track and with any luck he must be in the picture. Yours Truly. ,

Matoroa ran last throughout the ’race for the Marton Handicap last Saturday, so he will need to improve a lot, and so will Hunting Cat, who was never prominent at Foxton, but a fresh horse in Yours Truly is a possibility. He won over seven furlongs at the last meeting held at Otaki in June and, though he subsequently failed in three starts last season, he will have to be considered.

Form Prospects. Winsome Lu and Solaria divided the minor honours behind Homily in the Marton Handicap last Saturday, and Winsome Lu's performance was a bit the better as she did not get the good run that Solaria did l out in front, and she finished well. She also has the advantage of being reliable at the barrier. Last Saturday in a snap start both Solaria and Homily, who are apt to play up, got off well, something that backers of

Solaria do not usually enjoy. He is also engaged in the seven furlong event.

Back to the Flat. Dorado has lately been winning over hurdles, but prior to that he ran a good fourth over seven furlongs at Marton, and he should have a chance. Inane will have to improve on her Foxton and Marton .showings, but Lord Moutoa has run well lately over nine furlongs with good weights iii hack races,, and should be a possibility with nearly two stone oft his back.

Arctic King Reappears. In the Hema Te Ao Handicap the distance will hardly be far enough for Arctic King, and Tooley Street will most likely start in the longer race. However, on his Riccarton form he has a chance here if he starts. Disdain ran a good race first up over six at Foxton, but over seven here may still be a bit new. Gay Chou, however, should run well. He was fourth at Foxton over six, coming on at the right end from a poor early position. Fresh Horse.

Laughing Lass is a fresh horse and has not raced since Faster, when she was third to' Gold Vaals and Homily over a mile. If the early spring form of the other horses in the stable is any guide, she will need a race. Screen Star, on the other hand, is seasoned and in consistent and winning form, while Royal Star II attracted attention to himself by his excellent race last. Saturday into fourth place in the Marton Handicap. He was a winner on the track in December last over seven, when Mittie just failed to concede him 181 b. Mittie’s Form.

Royal Star II tomorrow gives Mittie 111 b , so they meet again at a difference of no less than 201 b., which is an indication of how Mittie’s form has slipped. She would be troublesome if she struck form. When Tooley Street wop. at Riccarton he gave her 31b., and now concedes her 181 b. Mittie has run twice since, at Wanganui. She was favourite for the Seafield Handicap the. first day, when she ran a poor fifth behind Lucullus Lad, and on the second day she failed to get away on terms in the Higgie Handicap, won, by Sly Fox, and was never in the picture.

May Need Longer Journey. Siegmund in his only race this season •finished very well at the end: of six at the Foxton meeting, and he might .be. a possibility, though one would prefer him over a still longer journey. Lord Cavendish is fresh, not having raced since his failure at Wellington in July, but his two previous races produced wins.

Good Race Last Start. The Crooner ran an excellent race into third place over six at the Foxton meeting and though he pulled up lame afterward there is apparently not much wrong with him. Over the extra furlong he should have a good' chance of .reversing •places with Screen Star. Notium has failed too often to be fancied.

Good Last Season. Globe Trotter is a fresh horse who might go well. His two-year-old. form was good handicap class, and he is fairly forward. However, for a first start as a three-year-old he has strong opposition.

Races Well Fresh. iMatoru failed to get any money last season, but once or twice at the end of

the period he looked likely and he is always most dangerous when fresh. Sporting Gift will need improvement, but Corroboree, a good beginner and a bold goer in front, might emulate the deeds ot his stablemates Florence Mills and Quadroon and be bard first up. Cricket has no form. Dual Engagements.

There arc several dual engagements at Otaki tomorrow. Dorado is in the hurdles .-Hid Ling .Memorial ; Lady Chat is in the hurdles and Tuari Hack; Haupongi is in the Pabiko Hack and I’uhi Maiden , Le Toquet is in the Pahiko Hack and Tuari Hack; Vadanoe is in the Pahiko Hack in the Katikiku Hack; Solaria ami Tooley Street are in the Ling Memorial and Hema Te Ao Handicap; Conversion is in tlie Pabiko Hack and the Tuari Hack; and Bonrmond is in the Maiden and the Tuari Hack. Race Order.

The Puhi Maiden Plate is the fourth race on the programme at Otaki tomorrow. In the acceptance list published yesterday it appeared as the second race.

Chat for Sale. The six-year-old mare Chat is advertised for sale. Chat is by Siegfried from Taleteller and- is sound and in full training. She is a good jumper and a winner over hurdles, a feat uro of her form being the way she runs on.

Spell for Lutanist. The three-year-old Lutanist, who suffered severe internal trouble a few weeks ago, has made a good recovery and it is now intended to turn him out for a lengthy spell on bis owner's property at Dannevirke. Lutanist’s place in F. Davis's stable will be taken by a two-year-old filly by Solicitor-General. For Melbourne.

Catalogue has gone to Melbourne in charge of Alan McDonald. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Barnes also sailed to see him run in his second Melbourne Cup.

Southern Youngsters. After declaration of first forfeit, seven two-year-olds were left in the McLean Stakes. Gold Flight and Doria are the best and most forward at this stage, but the first named has to carry a penalty of 101 b. for his win at Ashburton.

Survey. Survey is still spelling and his INew Zealand Cup engagement will not be continued.

Thoroughbreds from England. The stallion Revelation, who was purchased on behalf of Messrs. F. J. Savage and Sons, Waimana.a Bay of Plenty, has reached Auckland from England. He was bred in 1932 and is by Manna, who wou the Derby and Two Thousand Guineas, from White Bud, by White Eagle from My Own, by Minoru, who also won the Derby. Caerlaveroek, a brood mare by Ellangown.’from Masr, with a colt foal by April Fifth, who was purchased on behalf Mr. J. Fletcher, Auckland, has also arrived. Several other thoroughbreds for southern breeders purchased by Mr.. 0. E. Robertson are included in the consignment and they will be sent to Wellington. Answers to Correspondents. “Loco,” Wanganui: As the horse never had any chance of being a started it is no wager. “Argument,” Wanganui: There will always be arguments over finishes, whether won easily or otherwise. You can rest assured that in the race under review it was won comfortably.
