Values At Yesterday’s Sales

i Johnsonville An average yarding of bullocks and a small yarding of cows and heifers was offered at yesterday’s Johnsonville stock eale. The bullocks were chiefly heavyweight cattle, with a few pens of light and unfinished sorts. Prime heavyweight bullocks met with a ready sale, prices showing little alteration, and medium and lightweight cattle were easier by 5/- to 10/- a head. No heavy cows came forward. Competition was not keen, with prices fully 15/- to 20/- a head down on last week. No runners and vealers were offered. There was a large yarding of all classes of sheep, -with an increased penning of spring lambs. No heavyweight wethers came forward, the yarding consisting of medium and lightweight sheep. All classes sold with little alteration. The yarding of ewes was of exceptionally good quality, with prices, on a par with upcountry rates. Prices for spring lambs were 1/6 to 2/- a head down on last week. Prices are:—

There were again small entries in the principal sections at the Addington sale todaj? and there was a rise in the values of fat sheep, but these were still not up to -those at the end of August. Fat cattle were firm on last week, with an increase for better sorts. Among the store sheep a line of quality ewe hoggets sold for 26/-, small and backward sorts making _l2/1. Pens of ewes and lambs sold at 5/6 to 13/9. About 3500 fat sheep were offered, compared with 4000 last week, and generally values were 2/- to 2/6 a head better than last week. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 47/4; pqime, 38/- to 42/-; prime medium, 32/6 to 37/6; light, 21/- to 26/-; extra prime heavy ewes, to 44/7; prime heavy, 31/- to 35/-; prime medium, 27/6 to 30/6; light, 18/- to 22/-. Fat cattle numbered 330, compared with the normal yarding of about 500. Primer qualities advanced by up to 20/a head, and medium up to 10/-._ Extra prime heavy steers made to £25/12/6; prime heavy, £lB/15/- to £2O/10/-; prime medium, £l7 to £lB/10/-; light, £lO/15/to £l3/10/-; extra prime heifers, to £2O 2/6; prime, £l4 to £l6/10/-; medium, to £l3/5/-; light, £lO to £ll/15/-; extra prime cow?., to £l7/7/6; prime, £l2/5/to £l4/5/-: medium, £lO/5/- to £l2; light, £B/10/- to £lO. A slightly smaller yarding of porkers came forward and values were firm on last week. Choppers were forward in .medium numbers and another keen sale resulted. More baconers were penned, and the sale was again excellent at last week’s values. Choppers made £3/18/6 to £7/8/6; porkers, £2/7/6 to £3/4/6; average price a lb., 7Jd. to 83d.; baconers, £3/9/6 tp £5/17/6; average price a lb., 7d. to Bd.

HASTINGS, September 27.

Forward bullocks aud good three-year steers met with a keen demand at Stortford Lodge today, when the market showed a rise of up to 10/- a head. The yarding of 700 bead included some splendid, well-bred cattle. Many pens of out-of-condtiion sorts met with a dragging sale. Forward bullocks topped the market at £lO/7/-, and other lines brought to £9/14/-. An exceptionally short yarding in the fat cattle section resulted in a sensational rise, and the season’s peak values were eclipsed. Only 90 head were penned. Quality sorts were in short supply and much below the requirements. The sale was fully on a par with the selling at Waipukurau yesterday and many of the pens made the dearest buying known for many years. Rarely has such a plain offering of cows been made, and they sold to 42/- a 1001 b. Heifer beef sold up to 46/- a 1001 b. On today's returns, outstanding quality pens would have realized remarkably high values. Ox beef was in short supply and did not compare in weight with that penned at late sales to make to £l7. The market was topped by a well-bred Aberdeen Angus bullock. Several bullocks in forward store condition only and not killable were passed at the good figure of £lO. The heifers penned were all light sorts, killing under 6001 b., with some not being more than 4001 b. Except for the tops, quality was lacking. The cow pens were very mixed and included few quality lots. The best price was £l2/10/for an entry killing at about 6001 b. As the sale progressed competition remained very keen, and most of the offering was purchased by.local buyers. A brisk market was shown for store sheep. More "than 4000 head were penned, wethers and hoggets predominating. Values for wethers advanced up to 2/a head, and hoggets were fully 1/- a head dearer. A draft of 2000 two and fourtooth wethers brought 22/8 for 1116, the balance selling at from 20/3 to 20/9. The 20/- mark was topped bv several other offerings which went to 21/6. Wether hoggets in forward order and showing size ranged from 18/6 to 19/-. Wellgrown ewe hoggets, which had been well done, topped the market for the season at 26/9. Good-mouthed ewes, with forward lambs at foot, made 13/-, all counted.

Pahiatua Cattle Fair

PAHIATUA, September 27.

Two-year steers and yearling steers met with a better demand than was first expected, taking into consideration the values offered for bullocks, at the cattle fair conducted in Pahiatua yesterday by the Associated Auctioneers. Fat cattle were scarce, and keen competition for bullocks and cows showing quality and finish was apparent. The top price for bullocks in this section was £l4/10/-, and round £8 was realized for medium-quality cows.

Prices are: Three-year steers, £7/17/6 to £6/10/-; two-year steers, £6/17/- to £4/15/-; smaller cattle, £4/12/6 to £3 15/-; yearling P.A. steers, £4/15/- to £3 15/-; smaller cattle, £3/5/- to £2/15/-; Hereford yearling steers, £3/11/- to £2 15/-; yearling heifers, £2 to £l/2/6; two-year heifers, £3/5/- to £2/5/-; fat cattle—bullocks, £l4/10/- to £l2/5/-; cows, £7/15/- to £6; medium ex-dairy Korts, £5 to £4/5/-.

Gisborne Dominion Special Service. GISBORNE, September 27. An entry of 2000 head was forward at the cattle fair conducted in Gisborne today. Immediately following heavy rain the bidding from local and Hawke’s Bay buyers was very keen, values showing a good improvement on the last fair. Only one pen of bullocks, numbering 96, was yarded. They were outstanding four-year animals from Hutchinson Bros, and they realized £9/12/-. Beef was of excellent quality and recent values were eclipsed. Prices are: Yearling steers, good, £7 13/-; two-year steers to £6/13/-, generally £5/1/- to £6/1/-; yearling steers to £4/10/-. generally £3/4/- to £4; medium and rough steers £2/9/- to £2/13/-; empty cows, best £4, in fair condition £2/10/to £2/15/-; grown heifers, extra £6, generally £4/6/- to £5/7/- ; two-year heifers £3/11/-; yearling heifers £l/4/- to £2 17/-; cows, extra £lO/3/- to £lO/14/-, good £B/6/- to £9/13/-.

Westfield By Teicgraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 27. The beef pens at the Westfield sales today were well filled, and the quality being good, latt» rates were maintained. Extra choice ox beef made 42/- a 1001 b. Choice and prime 37/- to 41/-, prime cow and heifer 33/- to 40/-, boner and rough 25/- to 34/-. Extra heavy prime steers made £l7 to £lB/10/-, heavy £l5 to £l6 15/-, medium £l4 to £l-1/17/6, light £ll to £l3/15/-, unfinished £8 to £ll/15/-; extra heavy prime cows and heifers £l2 to £l5/2/6, heavy £lO to £ll/15/-, medium £8 to £lO/7/6, light £5 to £B/15/-. Good-quality vealers' and runners met with a good demand, values being firm at late rates. Extra heavy prime wethers, woolly, made 37/- to 39/-, shorn 27/6 to 29/5, heavy 34/- to 36/9, shorn 24/6 to 26/-; medium wethers, woolly, 30/- to 34/6, shorn 20/- to 23/-; light wethers, woolly, 25/- to 30/-; unfinished wethers 18/- to 23/6; extra heavy prime ewes, woolly, 26/- to 30/-, shorn 20/- to 22/3; heavy ewes, woolly, 24/6 to 27/9. shorn 17/- to 19/9; medium ewes, woolly, 20/to 25/6, light 16/- to 21/-, unfinished 14/- to 18/6. The lamb entry, which was also average, held to recent levels. Prime lambs made 18/- to 30/-, others 10/- to 17/9; spring lambs to 30/3. A smaller pig entry sold at firm late rates. Burnside Bv Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, September 27. At the Burnside stock sale today, 270 fat cattle were penned, compared with the 300 of last week. About half the yarding consisted of prime cattle, with a number of outstanding sorts included. The market opened firmly, but was easier later -for certain classes. An outstanding bullock made £23/17/6. Prime bullocks made to £l7/17/6, medium £ll/2/6 to £l3/2/6, light from £2; extra prime cows and heifers to £l4/17/6, prime £lO/10/- to £l2/12/6, medium £6/12/6 to £B/7/6, light from £6/2/6. The small offering of 40 stores brought unchanged values. The medium entry of 1629 fat sheep included a good proportion of prime wethers. Some extra heavy prime wethers were forward. Values were slightly easier at the start, but firmed as the sale progressed. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 44/6, prime 38/- to 40/-. medium °9/- to 31/-. light from 21/-; extra prime heavy ewes to 35/-, prime 29/- to 31/-, medium 22/- to 25/-, light from la/-. Seven spring lambs were offered and sold from 30/- to 34/6. One hundred and nineteen fat pigs were forward, the majority being porkers. Porkers eased slightly, but baconers rsere firm.
