NEWS IN BRIEF

Warlike Exhibits

Topical exhibits at the present time, a German torpedo and a Zeppelin bomb have been placed, on exhibition at the Dominion Museum. They are Great War relies, part of a large quantity of war material presented, to the Museum by the Defence Department some time ttgo. They are placed in the foyer adjoining the main hall.

I'achting Season to Open. The opening of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s season has been set down for October 21, this being some few weeks earlier than usual. It is considered necessary to start operations as early as possible, iu view of the coming Centennial Exhibition, during which it is expected that a'special regatta will be held, of magnitude befitting such an important occasion.

Fire Brigades’ Display. He had been advised by the Undersecretary of Internal Affairs, Mr. J. W. Heenan, to go ahead with the plans for the New Zealand volunteer lire brigades’ national centenary demonstration which was to be staged at Petone in March, 1940, said the superintendent, Mr. J. R. Gaynor, at the fortyeighth annual reunion last night of the Petone Fire Brigade.

Impressions of Sydney. ■ “Everything in Sydney that God made is beautiful, but much that man has made is ugly,” said. Mr. Byron Brown, Wellington, on his return from a holiday in Australia. He said that Australian architects were copying the American skyscrapers, with the result that the streets were fast becoming deep gloomy canyons where the sunshine was restricted. School. Prizes.

The receipt of several special prizes for the end of the year had raised the question as to whether class prizes should be bought this year or whether the money available should be set aside for special patriotic funds, said Miss N. G. Isaac, principal of Wellington East Girls’ College, in her report at Tuesday’s meeting of the Wellington Colleges Board. “I feel sure that the girls would willingly forego prizes if it were considered advisable,” added Miss Isaac. “These poor children get enough of the war brought into their lives without us starting off like that,” said Mr. IV. V. Dyer. It was decided to advise Miss Isaac that at present the board did not favour the curtailment of prizes.

Exhibition Season Tickets. “The charges made for season tickets at the exhibition are to be 30/for adults and 15/- for persons under 16 years of age. It seems very unfair that there should not be an intermediate charge for adolescents between the ages of 16 and 21 years,” stated Mr. W. A. Armour, headmaster of Wellington College, in his report at Tuesday’s meeting of the AVellington Colleges Board. “I suggest,” he added, “that season tickets at £1 be issued for young people coming under this division. Very many pupils at our postprimary schools are more than 16 years of age. It is too much to exiiect that they should pay as much for a season ticket as an adult. Also, for young people under 21 years who have just gone to’ work, a concession should be made in admission prices.” The board decided to refer the suggestion to the exhibition authorities.
