Victoria League Welcome To Mrs. J. A. Doctor

A delightful welcome from a large gathering of members awaited Mrs. J. A. Doctor, president of the Wcdlingtou branch of the Victoria League, when she was the guest of honour at a “welcome home” reception last night. She had been absent abroad for nearly a year, and her return last, week was keenly anticipated. Last evening she was able to tell friends something of her experiences when travelling and of her visit to Victoria League headquarters in London. The reception was held in the Eng-lish-Speaking Union rooms, Mrs. Doctor and Mrs. L. O. 11. Tripp, who was acting president, during the absence of the president, receiving the the guests. Mrs. Doctor wore a hostess gown of orchidpink jersey crepe, with a corsage spray of tahiti red roses and a shoulder cape of ermine. She carried a lovely bouquet of mauve and pink stocks and carnations. Mrs. Tripp was in a gown of lido blue crepe suede with lace bodice and draped sleeves, and had pinned freesias and maidenhair on the shoulder line of her frock.

Mrs. Tripp expressed, on behalf of the league, the pleasure it was to have Mrs. Doctor with them and to know that she was safely back. Experiences Recalled. “I have been feeling shivery and cold after spending some weeks in the tropics, but tonight I am really glowing,” Mrs. Doctor said in response to the welcome she had received. She referred to her trip and to the "links of Empire” which were visited while overseas. The wonderful work the Victoria League was doing in London was outlined, including a resume of the conference held while she was in Ismdon, and at which she was a New Zealand delegate. The committee which arranged the evening was: Mesdames A. A. Cramond, W. H. Gledhill, 0. N. Gillespie. D. Rodie, 0. E. Corrigan, M. H. Chatfield, H. McGill R. B. Gibbons, Hampton Brown, J. Pow, B. McKinley, P. de B. Brandon, G. E. King, Misses A. McLean, A. Kane, F. Penney, M. Butler,. J. R. Barr, M. MeGregor, P. Gledhill. A short musical programme was given, items being presented by Miss Florence Penney, songs; Miss Mifawny Davies, songs; Miss Nora Gray, pianoforte solos; and the Misses Ida Lockwood, Nora Gray and Wood, instrumental trio. Lovely flowers were arranged in the reception-room, lilies, daffodils and Rhododendrons being massed in bowls against the walls and on the tables. A delicious supper was served at the conclusion of the evening. Many Guests.
