AWAPUNI TRACKS

Horses For Otaki Meeting

Dominion Special Service

PALMERSTON N., September 27.

Track conditions arc now more favourable, the going being quite good. Some interesting work was accomplished, specially by horses engaged at the Otaki meeting.

Catalogue, who looks in splendid order to be speeded up. will be shipped to Sydney by Thursday night’s boat Catalogue will be in charge of Alan McDonald; his assistant being K. Bates, who filled a similar position last year. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Barnes will also be passengers for Australia, where they will meet Mrs. Barnes s sister. Mrs. 1Jamieson, who has been touring in the East. They will probably return home in December. Disdain and Laughing Lass are rapidly approaching racing condition, but will probably need a race or two before being well attuned. They were partners over five furlongs, which were covered in 1 6-1 —a satisfactory sprint. Thrasos, who bears an improved appearance, Colonel Bogey, and La Bru were associated in a seven furlong gallop on the course proper. La Bru and Colonel Bogey were responsible lor jhe pace in the early stages. Ou entering the straight Thrasos improved his posii tiou and as they passed the post was on terms with Colonel Bogey, the time reI corded being 1.434, the last three in a ! shade under -10. Colonel Bogey looks in : good order for coming engagements. Florence Mills, usually a smart track worker, impressed by the style in winch she reeled off three furlongs in 38. Her next outing will be at Trentham. Sporting Gift and Israel, from Jim Manuel’s stable, strode nicely over five furlongs, which were completed in l.v 3-5, the last three in 40 3-5. Israel is now putting more dash into his work, and the same remarks apply to Sporting Grift, who is a likely sort to he in the early stake money. They will be raced at Otaki. Old Bill is in the midst ot a strong preparation, and he promises to be well forward for coming engagements. He was accompanied by Quadroon in a run over five furlongs on the plough, which was in good order. They were not bustled in the early stages, but came in from the three-furlong peg in 46 2-a. Old Bill will be stepped' out at Trentham and probably Quadroon. All Quiet (Siegfried— Speechless) and iMoradabad, inmates .of the same stable, will be on the easy list for about a week. ■ ' Royal Sign, a three-year-old gelding by Laughing Prince —Sigma, goes through the daily routine in such fashion as to indicate that he will help to make the finish of the Puhi Maiden Plate, at Otaki. interesting. He bowled along in very free style over live furlongs, on the course proper, iu 1.6 2-5. Manteau was restricted to an easy three furlongs.

Nigger Mark and Pitmark were given light sprint tasks. Tidewaiter and Classform were not required to do anything outside of light work. The former’s next start under the colours will be in the Mitchelson Cup, and all going well in the interim Classform will be raced at Trentham. Golden Ridge (W. Pine), who was given schooling lessons during the week, will not be a runner in the hurdle event at Otaki. z , It looks a s if Clarion Call (Jarvis) will stage a “comeback” judging by the manner in which he negotiated six hurdles, jumping with all his old-time dash. Ruaform (I. Rohloff) gave a safe exhibition over four obstacles. Cuisinier is a novice who shows natural jumping ability, and is likely to add interest to jumping events. Possessing plenty of pace, he should not be long in earning distinction. Cuisinier, who .will be ridden by E. Temperton, at Otaki, is trained by Jim Waller Riding engagements at Otaki: S. Anderson, Thrasos; W. Broughton. Parian, Mataroa, Notium, Joe Louis. Filetto and Sudan; G. Tattersall, Yours Truly, Peach King and Fauvette. Mr. S. Andrews has on his property at Awapuni a well-grown two-year-old filly by Tidal—Queen Salute. She is exercised on the roads, but her work will be more strenuous in a few weeks’ time. Mr. Andrews owns the Philamor mare Colibri, now trained by Alf Wright, at Woodville.

The following locally-trained horses are engaged at the Masterton meeting:— King’s Mark. Girl Pat. Miss I-lallowmet, Cuisinier. All Blood, Duncannon, Great Legion, La Coquette, and Parian. George New’s and Mrs. 'McDonald’s team.s were worked early. Most of the other trainers will follow now that the weather is more settled.
