PAEROA RACES

Poland Cup Field

PROSPECTS FOR SATURDAY

Dominion Special Service AUCKLAND. September 26. Good acceptances have been received for the first day of the Ohiiiemuri Jockey Club's*spring meeting at Paeroa on Saturday and the prospects for interesting racing are bright. Some very . capable performers are engaged and the term will be followed closely in view ol the fact that many of the horses in the fields arc candidates for the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting, which follows a week later. The betting will be under the win and place system. King Rey in Form. The Poland Cup, the chief event, has attracted a field of nine, and heading the list is the solid performer King Key. Tie clearly showed bv his line form in finishing third in the Avondale Cup and second in the Plumpion Handicap with 9.0 and 9.1 respectively, that lie is as well as ever. King Rey has proved himself over the II furlongs on this course, as he won the Ohineniuri Cup there two seasons ago with 9.0. Valmint has not raced since he won the Jellieoe Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month, but he has worked well at Ellerslie in the interim and should not lack the necessary condition to run a solid race, even though he is now well tip in the weights. Gold A aals, who was second last year, was well supported in his engagement on the second day at Avondale recently, but he failed to make a showing. In all possibility he may have needed the race and he may be seen to better advantage here. Hot Box has not been seen out since he ran a creditable third to Beaupartir and Peerless in the Great Northern St. Leger last Easter, and he may lack the necessary condition to see out the journey. As a three-year-old last season, Hot Box gave promise of developing into a good handicap performer.

Master Brierly Handily Placed.

Master Brierly’s form at Avondale does not inspire a great deal of confidence in him, but the distance will 'be iu his favour, and he is handily placed in the weights. Airam beat all except The Cardinal in the Avondale Cup, while slie maintained that good form by finishing third to Sly Fox and King Rey iu the' Plumpton Handicap on the second day of the Avondale Jockey Clubs spring meeting. She now meets King Rey on 31b. better terms, and if ou the same good behaviour at the barrier, she should prove difficult to beat. Philcourt® running at Avondale, where he finished fourth in the Plumpton Handicap, indicated that he is on the verge of returning to form. Ho is likely to have derived benefit from his recent racing and should prove difficult. to dispose of. Black Musk showed up prominently tor the greater part of the journey in the Avondale Cup, and, though the distance may be beyond him, he is well seasoned and is capable of a surprise. Since scoring a surprise win in hack class at Ellerslie last Christmas, Poland has failed to get into the money in 17 starts and will need to improve considerably if he is to succeed here. Solid support may come for Airam, King Rey aud Valmint. Llangollen to Reappear. The Flying Handicap has drawn a field of smart sprinters and a keen contest may be expected. The topweight, Llangollen, Is one of the best mares who has raced in Auckland iu recent years and if anywhere near her best would not bo out of it with 9.13. However, she has not raced since being narrowly defeated in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie in April and she is likely to be improved by a race or two. Orate was always in the picture in the Flying Handicap on the first day at Avondale aud, as he appears to have mended his barrier manners, he should be capable of a forward showing. Royal Bachelor disappointed in the same race, but a repetition of his form in the Jellieoe Handicap at Ellerslie last month, when he ran second to Valmint, would make him difficult to beat. He is a speedy beginner, which is an advantage on this track.

Pirate King, who was one of the most improved horses racing in the autumn, has not been seen out since the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting in April, when he won the Flying Handicap on the first day with 8.10. He usually races well fresh and can be relied upon to make a bold showing. Prince Acre showed that he retains his form well by finishing third to Erndale and Vai Lu in the President’s Handicap on the second day at Avondale, and, if the going should be easy, he will have to be respected.

Clmnee For Young Paddon.

Young Paddon gave indications of being an early winner when he ran third in the Admiralty Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month, but his subsequent form at New Plymouth was below expectations. He has had time to freshen up since then and may be capable of an improved showing. Gay .Seton is not too reliable and Bachelor King, on the strength of his second to Erndale in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, may be a better prospect. Te Monowai, who did not fulfil her engagements at Avondale, finished second to Brouwen at Ellerslie last month and, providing she has trained ou the right way, she should be capable of a forward showing. Te Monowai is a smart beginner and the turning track should suit her admirably. Miss To Koura has plenty of speed, but Maxani, who has been racing well in hack company with big weights, may be preferred. Popular fancies may be Te Monowai, Royal Bachelor, Pirate King anil Bachelor King.
