By Telegraph,—Press Association
WAIMATE, September 26.
Fire completely gutted John Bowron, Limited’s Mewsagency and bookseller’s shop aud spread under the roof to the ceiling of Jones and Son’s butchery and later to the ceiling of T. McPherson’s shoe store. The stock in both the latter was badly damaged by water and smoke. The alarm was given at 8.35 p.iu. The brigade had a difficult task in subduing the fire in Bowron’s, where it had a good hold among books, stationery and fancy goods. The brigade battled agaiust volumes of smoke and intense heat, with the roof red hot, to confine the outbreak in Jones’s to the ceiling and rafters. McPherson's roof was comparatively easily handled. Smoke also filled Mrs. Ward’s confectionary shop, in the fourth block. The butchery and bookseller’s shops are owned by Mr. A. Jones and are insured for £7OO each. Bowron’s stock and insurance are not available. Mr. McPherson owffied the other two shops which were insured for £6OO. McPherson's stock is insured for £6OO.
