Voluntary Workers Required

In Wellington

Appreciation of the selfless spirit of service and loyal devotion to duty shown by the man power of the British Empire was voiced by'Her Majesty, Queen Alary, after a recent visit to tlie London Ambulance Services. “The example they are setting is a real inspiration and encouragement to all of us in these days which are dark and sad,” she said, “though they are brightened by the abundant evidence of the willing response our countrywomen are making to every call upon their services. As yet our task has only just begun. Sacrifices and hardships must inevitably lie ahead of us and much exacting work, yet the spirit, with which our troubles are being met is such that we need feel no anxiety for the future.”

Here in AVellington there are few men or women who are not willing and eager to “do their bit” in some branch of war work. The Red Cross Society has received numerous offers of assistance already, but, as “first things come first,” a great deal of preliminary organization and work must be done in the clerical and training departments before many of these offers can be turned to account.

To expedite the society’s work an appeal is being made from the AVellington centre and headquarters, 61 Dixon Street, for the following materials and services:—

Personnel: For the headquarters staff, the offer of voluntary assistance for one regular day or half-day a week from four women or girls with, a knowledge of shorthand or typewriting; application to be made to Captain Galloway.

For the voluntary Aid Division: The sister-in-charge requests all who have passed the Red Cross Society’s examination in home nursing, in first aid, or both, and are thus eligible to join up with a V.A.D. unit, to get into touch with the A r .A.D. secretary, (51 Dixon Street. Those wishing to gain practical experience in hospital wards are first required to take the prescribed course of lectures and examination in hygiene and sanitation.

Alatcrials: Required for the headquarters staff, the loan of two typewriters; one filing-cabinet with drawers measuring 8J inches by 15 inches. For the headquarters administration department: Timber and supports for additional shelves as follows: —IS inches by 105 inches (2 shelves), 18 inches by 48 inches (2 shelves) ; also a small strong table and six plain wooden chairs. The instructional department urgently needs the following equipment: One small well-built type-writing table; one large cupboard for sorting equipment or several cupboards totalling an overall length of 9 feet, reaching a height of 7 foot 6 inches or more and 3 feet in depth, to Ito fitted with shelves as required : one hospital bed ; one horsehair mattress; one white marcella quilt (hospital bed size) ; six drawer-sheets, 3(5 inches by 54 inches of ordinary sheeting; six mackintosh sheets proofed on both sides and measuring 3(5 inches by 36 inches with an additional LS-inch “tuck-in” of unbleached calico stitched to each side; wooden splints (very necessary) in the following measurements and quantities: —4in. x 52in. x i|in. (12) ; 4in. x 42in. x ?in. (12); 4in. x 33in. x jin. (12) ; 3in. x 17in. x -Jin. (12) ; 3in. x 13in. x Jin. (24) ; 3in. x Sin x jin. (12).
