SPRING BLOOMS

Crowded Horticultural Show

Though the spring flower show of tile Wellington Horticultural Society was not blessed with a sunny day, the abundance of golden flowers on display quite made up for the deficiency, and the main floor of the Town Hall yesterday was crowded with keenly interested gardeners and flower lovers. The Governor-General, Viscount Gillway, performed the opening ceremony. He was accompanied by Lady Galway, and received by the president, Mrs. Knox Gilmer. Her Excellency wore a tailored hunter’ green ensemble with brown and white blouse finished at the neck with a diamond brooch. Her fur was a golden fox and she wore a brown french beret.

The official party sat on the stage above a bank of massed blossoms from the city council reserves department. With their Excellencies was Captain Lord Dormer, aide de camp, and others on the platform included Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Airs. P. Fraser, Air. AV. H. P. Barber, Sir Charles Luke, Mr. H. H. Aliller, Air. G. Nichol, Mr. and Airs. AV. Duncan, Mr. and Airs. E. Anderson, Air. and Airs. J. L. Arcus, Captain and Airs. Holm, and Air. and Airs. Barton.

Lady Galway was presented with a bouquet of tulips and hyacinths in pink and blue, and during the opening ceremony Airs. Knox Gilmer presented her with a charming and unusual bouquet of New Zealand foliage in many hues. Mrs. Fraser received a dainty spray of buff polyanthus and beronia. AVhen the ceremony was over their Excellencies were entertained at afternoon tea before making a tour of the exhibits.

The show was notable for tlie large attendance in both the afternoon and the evening. A string trio provided music, and afternoon tea was served by voluntary helpers, all members of the society, convened by Airs. G. Nicholl.
