SHELLS POUND WARSAW

Terrible Bombardment NO HOUSE ESCAPES DAMAGE More news of the terrible bombardment of Warsaw reached London on Sunday night. The murderous fire had kept up without an interval and not a house in Warsaw had escaped, it was reported. All the historic buildings were in ruins. The defence continued. Lublin had been attacked from all sides, but its heroic stand continued. A Polish military communique, received earlier tonight in London in morse from a Warsaw station, stated that German artillery and other forces were continuing a terrible bombardment against the city. The communique stated: “The City fights on.” According to news received, apparently from some small transmitter which the Poles have erected, during the last 24 hours more than 100 great fires had broken out. Apart from the shelling there were two German air raids. Modlin, too, was constantly attacked from all sides. The Poles claimed that an attack from the east of Warsaw was repulsed, and West of the Vistula the Poles carried out three surprise attacks by. night.—By radio. SPIRIT UNBROKEN Desperate Defence Of Warsaw LONDON, September 24. “The Germans apparently are determined definitely to break the spirit of the city’s defence,” stated a message from 'beleaguered Warsaw received in London yesterday afternoon, prefaced by the words: “Tenth message from Warsaw. Twentieth day of the siege.” The message depicting W’arsaw’s agony continued: “A barrage of fire from heavy artillery has lasted without a break since Saturday afternoon from 100 German guns, which are continually bombarding the city. Clergy this Sunday morning encouraged their flocks to maintain their fortitude and bear with patience the hour of trial, with a firm belief in their final deliverance from the Germans, who are apparently aiming to break the spirit of the city by the massacre of civilians, by paralysing food transport, and by destroying public utility institutions. “The spirit of the troops and the population is unbroken. The time limit of resistance is difficult to foresee, but early assistance, on which the valorous city and its heroic mayor, Starzynski, are pinning their only hopes, is indispensable in order to save hundreds of thousands of lives and save Warsaw from final destruction. Despite all the circumstances, the opinion prevails here that Warsaw’s SOS will rapidly be answered, because the saving of Warsaw is most important for Poland’s Allies.” Another message from Warsaw said that German artillery destroyed four churches and three hospitals filled with wounded. SERVICE IN SYDNEY N.Z. Expeditionary Force SYDNEY, September 25. Former members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who served in the Great War and who now live in Sydney attended the annual New Zealand service at St. Columbus Presbyterian Church last night. Two tattered banners were hung in the church on each side of a wooden cross from Pozieres. PLANS ABANDONED War Veterans’ N.Z. Visit (Received September 25, 10.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 25.
