Meetings Far August

The following are accounts of Women’s Institute activities lor August.

Reikorangi-VVaikanac.— A health talk, demonstrated with physical exercises, was given by Mrs. Phipps, Paraparaumu. The attendance was small because of sickness. Mrs. G. A. Monk presided. Com petition results were: Best bloom, Mrs. G. A. Monk, 1; Miss G. Mowbray, 2; .Miss A. Mowbray, 3. Best vegetable, Miss A. Mowbray, I and 3; Miss G. Mowbray, 2. Cretonne article, Mrs. Webb, sen., 1; Mi's. Roberts, 2; Mrs. A. K. Monk, 3. Nut loaf. Mrs. G. A. Monk, 1 ; Mrs. A. K. Monk, 2.

Porirua. —The president, Mrs. L. Thompson, was in the chair and welcomed members. Miss Mauz, a member from Manakau, demonstrated the making of cheese crate “hunipties.” A "golden thread" reading by Miss Ryan and two songs by the glee members were very much enjoyed. A sheaf of (lowers was presented to the 'demonstrator... The afternoon tea hostesses were Mesdames Thompson, Mexted, Evans and Miss Andrews.

Kaiparoro.— Arrangements were made for the institute dance and Mrs. Cecil Seymour gave a useful and interesting talk on first aid. Mrs. C. Welsh thanked the speaker. Mrs. C. Burton was iu the chair. The results of competitions were: Best flower of the month, Miss Parry, 1 ; Mrs. Burton. 2. Hand-made handkerchief, Miss A. Dick, 1 ; Miss E. Dick, 2. Lamiiigtons, Mrs. Braddick, 1 ; Mrs. J. Dick, 2. Games, .Mrs. Jim Dick, 1; Mrs. G. Hansen, 2. Miss Saunders gave a humorous 'recitation and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Falkner and Mrs. G. Hansen.

Mauriceville. — Mrs. A. Forsberg presided over a large attendance of members. After the ode and aspiration, the president read the prayer for peace. Correspondence dealing with the Pan-Pacific Conference and with the centennial ‘celebrations was read and dismissed. It was unanimously decided to co-operate in any way possible. In discussing the new banner, it was decided to ask all members to design a banner and bring as an entry to a competition at the next meeting. A debate ivith Kopauranga Women’s Institute will be held ,at the September meeting. Mrs. G. Mcßae gave a demonstration on felt work and displayed some very beautiful and useful samples of her work. An amusing competition was won by Mrs. Pain, with Mrs. Cameron second. Competition results were: Knitted garment, Miss J. Larsen, 1; Mrs. H. Nielsen, 2; Miss Al. Larsen, 3. Best bloom, Miss J. Larsen, 1 ; Miss M. Larsen, 2; Mrs. Cameron, 3. The "golden thread” vas carried by Mrs. Forsberg with a talk on Queenstown. Hostesses were Mesdames G. and H. Nielsen.

Parewanui. —The meeting was held at Apa House, Mrs. Whitehead presiding. Mrs. Anderson gave the motto, “People seldom improve when they have no other model but themselves to copy.” She also read her report of the last council meeting. An interesting demonstration on the making of willow baskets was giveu by Mrs, Ralfe. The competitions resulted:— Eggless chocolate cake, Mrs. Osborne, 1; Mrs. Whitehead, 2; Mrs. Watkins, 3. Best bloom, Mrs. AbraAam. Rolling shilling, Miss Healy. The September demonstration will be mop-making, and the competition footstools. Waitarere.— There was a large attendance of members and visitors, the meeting being presided over by Mrs. Aldrieh. Airs. Tabor, voluntary organizer, spoke to members, aud said she was pleased to see how well they were progressing for so young an institute. Mrs. Alyward gave an interesting- demonstration on pineneedle work. A competition for a thrift article resulted in. hire. Moffatt winning first place, with Mrs. Montgomery second and All's. Hood third. An apron donated by Mrs. Coleman was won by Mr. Goldsmith. The tea hostesses were Mrs. Gunn and Airs. Gordon.

Bulls.—-Aire. Jackson presided, aud a demonstration ou electrical cooking was given by Alias Wadunore, of the Wanganui Power Board staff. This was followed by a film showing the history of electricity. Invitations were received from Rongotea aud Carnarvon, to attend their social evenings. Competitions resulted as follows: —Antirrhinum, Aire. Simpkin, 1, Mrs. Farrar, 2. Best bloom, Mis% Broughton, 1; Airs. Ross, 2. Alarmalade, Airs. 8. Sanson, 1; Alias Broughton, 2 The demonstration next mouth will be on first aid, aud a knitted tea cosy; the competition, the best collection of biscuits made from one recipe. Alem-bers are reminded of the Bulls Women's Institute ibirthday, to be held on August 21. VVallacevilie.—Dr. C. S. Hopkirk addressed members on his recent trip abroad, describing places of interest he had visited. The choir, ■ with Airs. Wallis as leader, gave two items, and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Wallace, Watt, Watson, Sawtell, aud Seaife. The results of the competitions were as follows :—-Best .article not costing more than 1/-, Mrs. White and Airs. Anderson, equal, 1. Plate of scones, Airs, Anderson, k; Airs. White, 2.

VVallacevilie.— '.Members neld their social alleruoou recently when an excel lent programme was arranged by the hostesses, Alesuames W. Gorrie, S’jwtell, Williams, Hereock, and Braid. The choir, under the leadership of Airs. Wailis, gave two request numbers, and a soio was given by Airs. W. Robinson. Competitions were won by Airs. Watt, Airs. Aloore, Mrs. Allan, and Aire. Anderson. A guessing competition was won by .. Airs. - Donovan, and Mrs. White, equal, first, with Airs. Webber second. The monte carlo waltz was won by Airs, Spencer and Miss Keys, aud the mystery parcel by Mrs. White. Dance music was supplied by Airs. W. Robinson, and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs. Watl, vice-president, was iu the chair. Stokes Valley.— Solos, elocutionary items, .hints on knitting, sewing, cooking, floral work, rug-makiug, tapestry , and I'ancywork, were features delightfully blended into an original play, entitled "The Last Rehearsal.” This novel programme was arranged by Aire. 11. Lowe, and presented by members of the Stokes Valley League of Mothers. The stage was arranged as a drawing-room, and presenteel a very charming appearance. Mrs. ,O. Hurney presided, and cordially welcomed tjie visitors, also welcoming back Mrs. Bonthorne, who has recently returned from a holiday in Australia, and three new members, .Mesdames Lister, Allen, and Smith. Progress reports were given by the conveners (of the various circles; also by the sick visitor and librarian. The winners of competitions were: —Best marmalade made with New Zealand fruit. Mrs. Swanson, 1 ; Mrs. Holloway, 2. Best bloom, Mrs. Boyes. Otaki. — The August meeting was held recently in the Anglican Hall, and presided over by Airs. Synnott. Mrs. A. Bills, producer of the drama circle, and her performers, were heartily congratulated on their excellent presentations at the recent drama festival, and .Mr. A. Bills was specially thanked for his help in transporting properties to Manakau and Paekakariki. Mrs. Waite gave an interesting demonstration on _ the making of bags and novelties from felt hats and felt scraps. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, aud presented with a posy of violets. At the September meeting, Messrs. Fowler and Shearer will give a talk on matters of interest to motorists and others. The competitions will be:— An infant’s singlet (plain knitting), to be donated to the Plunket Society; best bloom; sweet loaf made with plain white flour. The August competitions resulted :—Five-minute sponge, Mrs. Jensen, 1; Mre. Mathie, 2. Rest bloom, Mrs. Mathie. 1 ; Mrs. Reynolds. 2; Miss P. Webster, 3. sack apron, Mrs. Jensen, 1 ; Mrs. Mathie, 2; Mrs. Nairn. 3. Afternoon tea was server! b.y the hostesses. Mesdames bile, Freeman, Ralph, Dowsett. B. Knox, G. White.

Poroutawhao. — The roll-call was “My Ambition as a Child,” won by Mrs. Alyward. Mrs. Tabor, who presided, won an impromptu speech. A demonstration of smocked aprons was given by Mrs. Tabor nnd Mrs. Penny was first in a competition arranged by Mrs. Tabor. Competition results were:—Seniors; Flour

bag article, Mrs. Church 1, Airs. Spiers 2, Aliss Church 3; mustard pickles, Mrs. Spiers 1, Airs. Church 2, Aliss Church 3. Juniors: Flour bag article, Aliss Joan Tabor 1, Aliss Pat Tabor 2. The hostesses were Airs. H. Kilsby and the Misses Irim and E. Spiers. . Levin.— An outline of the work being done for crippled children was given by Aliss Aiken, of the Palmerston North branch of the Crippled Children Society. She .stressed the necessity of finding suitable" positions for those, old enough and asked that interest be kept alive and that help from members for local crippled chib dren be forthcoming in the way of teach.ing suitable crafts. This assistance was promised. The president, Mrs. H. S. Powell, was in the chair and lour new members were enrolled. Mrs. Nye gave two elocutionary items and Airs. Procter, Foxton, displayed a collection of Christ 4 mas novelties. Results of competitions were: Knitted cosy, Mrs. Small 1, Mrs. Rankin 2, Mrs. Dalton 3; shortbread, Mrs. Burt 1. Mrs. Rankin 2, Mrs. Powell 8. Miss Thorpe wag the winner of a social competition. During the month the Levin Women’s Institute held a social afterubon at which the Dominion president, Alias Amy Kane, gave a talk. Presidents of all the women's organizations in Levin were present, as well as presidents and members of neighbouring institutes. •At the conclusion of her talk Miss Kane was presented with a lovely basket of violets from members of Levin and neighbouring institutes. Ihakara.— A report on the school for officers held at Lower Hutt recently was given by Airs. Gardiner. Mr. Fowler, traffic inspector, gave an address on the local motor regulations which was followed with keen interest. Mrs. Stewart presided over a large attendance. Competition results were: Knitted article, Mrs. A. W. Vincent 1, Mrs. R. W. Horne 2, Mrs. Elliott 3; flower competition, Mrs. Brookes; social competition, Mrs. O. A. Mark. The hostesses were Mesdames Laneaster, Vincent, Malcolm and Morah.
