She is Madame Olga Coelho, who specializes in singing to her own guitar accom pa niment. When Madame Coelho- left for her European tour in 1936 the Government of Brazil conferred on her the honour of authorizing her to propagate Brazilian music and folk lore throughout the world, recognizing her as able artistically and socially to carry out this work.
She is the only Brazilian artist to hold this special decree. Though she sometimes sings to pianoforte accompaniment, Madame Coelho specializes in singing to the Spanish guitar and. as well as Brazilian folk lore and music, she actually sings compositions of Mozart, Haydn and even Bach to the accompaniment of the guitar. Madame Coelho, whose husband travels with her, has toured Europe three times since 1936. This is her first, visit to New Zealand, after which she will leave for Australia, thence to Java, India and South Africa.
