Convicted of betting with a person under age, Edwin George Valentine Roberts and Thomas Andrew 7 O’Loughlin, both showmen, were fined £lO and £5 respectively by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M. A 16-year-old boy from Pohangina said he went alone to the Palmerston North winter show and walked round the sideshows. A stranger addressed him, and as they walked along “Sideshow Alley’’ another man came out with some darts and asked them to join in a game of throwing darts at numbers on a board. Two or three in a group put up money, and witness put up a half-crown, the money being handed straight to the keeper of the game. Witness lost 32/6 altogether, but later was handed back 12/6. After the half-crown witness put up a 10/- note and £l, one of the men present saying he would give witness 10/- as a share of £ 1 bet - „ Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohn said he saw O’Loughlin walking with the previous witness and followed them. The faster witness went the faster O’Loughlin went. Witness caught up with him and later saw Roberts, who owned the stall.
