ENCOURAGING NATIONAL
FITNESS
Representatives from different parts of the Dominion attended the annual meeting in Palmerston North recently of the New Zealand Weight-lifters’ Association. Important technical details were discussed. It was stated that the association was also taking a keen interest in the campaign for national fitness. A telegram of good wishes, expressing the hope of increased popularity for the sport, was received from tne Minister of internal Affairs, Mr. Parry. Mr. J. Elliott, Auckland, who was elected chairman, expressed the thanks ot all present wr the Keen, personal interest taken oy Mr. Parry in tne movement and puysical culture m general. Mr. Elliott addea that he lelt sure some scheme for cooperation could be drawn up in the near future.

That there wore still many potential champions not yet actively engaged in the competitions, was in evidence. Maori interest in the sport, it was stated, was being encouraged by Mr. Kappa V. Hogg. Wanganui, wno spoke of the seen interest of the people iu his district. It was agreed to assist in the work of improving the physical welfare of the Maoris in every way possible. The ..secretary was ■instructed to keep in touch with this new aspect of the sport.
Details as to the equipment to be used at all future contests aroused keen discussion, and the Olympic rulings were called on to decide the issue. Officers and representatives ot the past year were thanked for their untiring and capable efforts, which contributed largely ■to the successful year. The election of officers resulted as follow:—President, Dr. T. Harold Pettit (Auckland); vice-presidents, Messrs. McKeen, M.P., E. G. Webb, A. S. Blackie, and F. Rawlinson (Wellington), and T. Hercock (Napier), H. McCoy (Auckland) ; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. K. It. Mitchell (Wellington).
