TABLE TENNIS

Junior And Boys’ Teams Selected

GAME IN SCHOOLS

(By

Half-Volley.)

■The junior selection committee, Messrs. Heketa, Wilkin and Sutton, has made the following selection for the teams to meet the Hutt Valley on a date to be arranged : — i Boys: N. R. Searle (Shipping) C. V. Hart (W.H.8.), J. S. Stafford (University), G. Ross (Papatu) ; emergency, M. K. Hodson (W.H.8.). ' Juniors: J. Langdale (Onslow), N. Pavne (Customs), H. Peebles (Shipping), E O. Stevens (St. Peter’s) ; emergency, A.’M. MacLeod (University).. The selectors were disappointed at the lack of interest shown by clubs in failing to nominate players- for trial for the junior and boys’ teams. There were only seven boys nominated, and yet the M eilington Table Tennis Association is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Colleges to Take Up Table Tennis. The Wellington Table Tennis Association has been closely observing the question, of establishing table tennis as a game in secondary and primary schools. Steady progress has been made in the last three years, and today Wellington College, is providing suitable facilities and equipment for students to take up the. game. This is good news, and the association, m order to foster the game in the schools, has offered to provide lectures and exhibition games and arrange for coaching if so desired. The schools or colleges are not expected to play in the regular club fixtures, but it is hoped that they will create their own series of collegiate or school games as in other avenues of sport.

Wellington v. Auckland. ; The results to hand of the representative fixture played in Auckland last Saturday night reveal the outstanding strength of .the home team in the men’s section. In a total of 18 singles Auckland iron 15 to Wellington’s 3 —Boniface 2 and Gosling 1. The Auckland team, H. Boys (New Zealand champion), K. Cantlay (runnerup. New Zealand champion 1937 and 1938), A Pugh, E. Cheal. C. Burke, and E. Paton, played in that order. This is a-formidable array of table tennis talent. Wellington, however, fared better in the women’s singles. Of the eight singles played, Wellington secured 5 to Auckland’s 3, Misses Croxton and Johnston winning both their games, and Miss Wareham one.

Wellington v. Hutt Valley. The venue for this fixture is RoW’e’s Building, 63 Lower Cuba Street, on Saturday, August 5, at 7.15 p.m. Three tables are being provided. The Wellington team will be the same as that against Auckland. The New Zealand selector, Mr. K. Longmore, will be present to look them over. Interclub Rules.

As there are many clubs having two teams competing in the same grade during this season, it is as well to repeat interclub rule 8, which reads: “Where a club has two or more teams in the same grade, then any player who has played in two or more matches for any one of those teams shall be deemed to be a member of that team and shall not be eligible to play for any other of those teams unless the permission of the executive committee shall have first been obtained. The club playing' a player so ineligible shall forfeit the match or matches in which such player took part.” Registered Colours. The Shell club (Wellington) registered its colours with the association, and these were approved at the executive meeting on July 26. The colour combination, black and gold, is that of the association. The difference is in the monogram. The association has W.T.T.A. in gold letters as a monogram, worn on the left-hand side, whereas the club has its business “shell” design in gold used as a monogram on the righthand side, the women members wearing the .black pleated skirts with black jumpers and gold “Shell” monogram.
