HOMEBY STEEPLES TO PADISHAH

Power Chief Destroyed CHRISTCHURCH HUNT RESULTS Nightcalm And Aussie Ra Win Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. / The Christchurch Hunt Club’s annual meeting Was held in fine but cold weather. The attendance was good and the track was in excellent winter order/ - The totalizator handled £16,025 (win £7719/10/and place £8305/10/-), compared with £13,790 last meeting. A Novice Succeeds. There were only three starters in the Christchurch Hunt Cup Steeplechase and Newly Rich, having his second race only, justified his short price by leading throughout. Newly Rich drew away passing the half-mile and was well clear at the top brush, at which Hostage fell. The favourite then cantered home an easy winner from Guapo. Hostage was later remounted and, going back to where he fell, completed the course to secure third money. The winner is a five-year-old gelding by Roydon from Lady Ball, dam of Gay Ballerina and La Moderne. Dashing Display. The Lawford Flack and Hunters’ Steeplechase was an easy proposition for the favourite, El Caballo, who gave a dashing display and outjumped his opponents throughout. The race was spoilt to a large degree by Redolent when in the lead falling at the second sod wall, tha, fourth fence on the journey, and Uncle Jim and Night Wind followed suit. Macalpein then went to the front and kept his place till he ran off at Cutts's brush, leaving Top Rank in charge, but the latter hit the post and rails seven furlongs from home and El Caballo ran past him to open up a gap from Top Rank, with Tomcat well in the rear. El Caballo was never in danger in the run home. Top Rank tired after jumping the last fence and Tomcat comfortably beat him to the post. . Top Rank returned with the skin of his kneecap torn off as a result of his mistake at the post and rails. Redolent broke his back and was destroyed. El Caballo put up an attractive performance under his solid weight. Macalncin was going well when he ran off and would have lent more interest to the final stages. Impressive Win. Nigger Boy was always one of the lead-, ers in the Maiden Stakes and had an impressive and comfortable win. He was in front at the false rail from Lord Midas, Lady Don, Swingtime and The Duel, and, drawing away in .the last furlong, was not troubled to beat Lord Midas, who as easily beat the fast-finish-ing St. Cloud. Lady Don and In the Dark were abreast next, in front of Swingtime, Racewell and Ngnitaina. Nigger Boy, who is a half-brother to Spanish Lad,-started from 'wide out, but soon had a good position and had the race won, early in the run home. Lord Midas showed improved stamina, as did St. Cloud, who did her best work at the right end. Lights Out, who disputed favouritism with Lord Midas, was never prominent. Padishah’s Success. Much interest was evinced in the Homeby Steeplechase, and- an excellent race was staged, marred ouly by a fatal mishap .to Power Chief, who fell at. the sod wall near the mile post, and by Burwood breaking down, about five furlongs from home. Burwood and Gold Wren carried on in front from the early stages, setting a slow pace, and though Padishah was soon in last place he was not very far away. Gold Wren only lasted for a mile, and Burwood showed the way to Manawatu entering upon the second circuit. Padishah then drew to the front, but was steadied in behind going to Cutts’. He, however, again jumped to the front at the kennels double, and led Burwood round the top. Here Burwood weakened and Cottingham drew into second place. Padishah had a big lead entering the straight from Cottingham and, jumping the last fence .well clear, went bn for a decisive win. Slayer tackled Cottingham in the run home, but the latter was able to hold on for second money, There wak then a big gap to Manawatu and Gold Wren. Burwood was pulled up after jumping the second, to Inst fence, and walked in very lame. Padishah did not put a foot wrong throughout and was excellently handled by his amateur- rider, who saved every inch of ground possible. He will definitely start in the Grand National. Cottingham did very well considering his little race experience over country and is also certain to fulfil his Grand National engagement. Slayer found the fences too formidable and Gold Wren, though giving his usual brilliant display, failed iu stamina. Burwood would have been second but for breaking down, this time in his sound leg. Mauawatu was outclassed. Power Chief turned a somersault when he failed to eight the sod wall and, breaking his pelvis, was destroyed. A Big Dividend. The Camla Hack Handicap resulted in a surprise victory for Gay Parade. Sir Gladsome was the early leader and led on to the course proper from Great Memory. Withdrawal, Ohmaha and Donadea. Withdrawal gradually overhauled, the leader in the run home and appeared’ to be in for a win when Gay Parade flashed up on the outside, and the lastnamed was going away nt the post to beat Withdrawal, who similarly accounted, for Donadea, who put in some solid work nearing home. Lockit was a length away, in front of Astaire. Teak, Waka and Screamer. , . , ~ , Gay Parade, who is now held on lease by his trainer, F. Christmas, won well in spite of having hlid very little fast work since he was recommissioned a few weeks back. Withdrawal ran n good nice, but is never likely to be above moderate class. Donadea appeared to be cheeked when going for an opening on the fence inside the distance, and he also caused trouble to Ohmaha. who was going, well at the time. Lockit was disappointing, as he hnd every chance if he had produced his track form when called upon in tlie straight. , Aussie RaThe Longbeach Hurdles provided an excellent contest with a solid pace on all the way. Travenna rushed to the front from the barrier rise and kept his place to the last fence. He was closely attended by Dividend, Last Link and Vantoon over the first mile and led round the home turn and into the straight from Aussie Ra and Recollection, with Last Link and Mount Vai bandy. Travenna was first, over the last fence, but Aussie Ra quickly headed him Off on the tint and carried on to win decisively. Mount Vai finished fast , to get within half a length of Recollection for third money, with a big gap to King Rey and Dividend and another to Araboa and Last Link. Emmeline Girl was pulled up in the back stretch Aussie Ra gave an excellent <»rrind National trial and will be improved by the race. Travenna also shaped well, but the National journey will find him out. Recollection looked likely at the Inst fence lint failed to carry on. Mount Vai was closer ill the finish thfin at any other stage of the race. Dividend went well considering his lack of racing, of late ' King Rey wus very disappointing. In

previous races he rushed to the fron early, but on this occasion he jumped without confidence and was out of the tussle with five furlongs to go. H. turner was reprimanded by the stewards tor his handling of King Rey. Brabazon Handicap.

There was some widely distributed speculation on the Brabazon Handicap. Second Innings, who gave trouble at tne barrier, and The Sandwich Man, xoinTruly and Catalogue were slow to move off. Spanish Lad was the early leader and piloted Grey Honour, Nightcalm, Haughty Winner and Alma into the straight. Nightcalm drew to the front at the distance and then Haughty Winner headed him. but after a hard tussle to the post Nightcalm regained the lead and won well by a neek. Alma finished fast into third place, a head in front or Grey Honour, with Wine Card, I 1 leet Street, Lady Leigh and Spanish Lad next. This was Nightcalm's first race for a few months- and his success suggested he will be a big winner in the. new season. Haughty Winner was confidently supported by his stable and only just failed. Alma's performance attracted attention, as she did her best work at the business end. Grey Honour ran his best race for a long time. Disappointments were Trench Fight, and Lady Leigh. .There was some excuse for the showing of Yours Truly, as he was badly placed after his bad beginning. Catalogue was always near the rear and finished a long way back. A Narrow Verdict. Wagner and Dancing Flame disputed favouritism in the Kennels Hack Handicap, but while the latter ran. a sound race. Wagner was never in the picture. Dancing Flame began smartly and led into the straight well clear .of Dranoel, The Wrecker. Capricious, Captain Briice and Flame Queen. Dranoel drew past Dancing Flame half a furlong from home aud appeared to have the race in hand, till Captain Bruce issued a challenge. In an exciting tussle, Captain Bruce wore.down Dranoel and got in the deciding stride to win by the narrowest margin of the day’s racing. Dancing Flame weakened into a fair third placing, a length in front of The Wrecker, with Capricious at the head of the remainder. This was Captain Bruce’s second race in the South Island, he having filled third place at Washdyke a week previously. He has proved a good bargain for his Auckland owner, Mr. W. Hosking, who paid 70 guineas for him a few weeks ago. Dranoel ran his best race to date. Dancing Flame showed a turn of speed, but found the journey beyond her.
