PLUNKET BALL AT EASTBOURNE
forerunner to the Eastbourne Plunket Ball, which Is to be held on August 5, bridge parties and competition afternoons have been held on the eastern side of the harbour. Among those who have held parties are: Mrs. C. Girdlestone, president of the local branch, and Mesdames D. N. Isaacs, V. G. Jervis, A. P. King, D. Hall, F. Josling, N. H. Brown, H. T. Underhill, F. C. Craig and Miss E. Isaacs. The ball this year is to be military in form, and the decorations committee is making good progress under the artistic direction of Miss A. St ace. The supper, which is to be of the best home-made variety, is in the capable hands of Mrs. D. M. Isaacs and Mrs. A. E. Burch. All other arrangements are being carefully thought out so that the ball should be very successful, and it is expected that many friends from Wellington will be present as usual at this annual event.
Never have hats been so varied in style. There is something really becoming to suit every type and every age. Veils are more popular than ever if that be possible, and it is wonderful what a soft effect they create. The tailored hat, which is perfect with tweeds, is simple in line, with usually a knot or band of grosgrain ribbon. For more formal occasions ostrich feathers are very fashionable, and not only in black or white, but in the loveliest shades of blue, wine, etc. Most of these hats are worn with veils either right over the face or flowing in graceful drapes. For later wear flowers are to be much worn—straws trimmed with flowers, or glamorous hats completely of flowers, tipped well forward and secured with a snood, so much more attractive than an elastic. Agnes Samson has a big stock of unblocked felts and straws—“hoods’’ to be technical—and she specializes in making the smartest hats of individual distinction. —Agnes Samson, Lambton Quay.—Advt,
