POLITICAL TRENDS

Use Of Football Terms THE ONLY TRUE RIGHTWINGER Humorous reference to current political trends, with the use of an entertaining play on words, was made by speakers at a farewell tendered by the Government to the members of the New Zealand Rugby League team yesterday on the eve of their departure for England. The upshot of it was that the Parliamentary Under-Secre-tary for Housing, Mr. Lee, who has been closely identified with League football, declared himself to be the only “true right-winger in the party.” The ball was set rolling by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Hamilton, who, in wishing the team good luck, said he hoped that, as Mr. Lee was a keen follower of the sport, they would see that the left wing was well supplied with the ball. He hoped that the serum would not hang on to the ball too much. The subject was taken up later by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, who said he hoped the scrum would not deplore, as much as Mr. Hamilton seemed to deplore, the right of the left wing to have the ball now and then.

Mr. Hamilton: Well, I hope the team will see that the Opposition doesn’t get it too often.

Mr. Parry: They will look after that all right. “There is just one thing I would like to clear up,” said Mr. Led, when he was asked to speak. “As you con see, gentlemen,” he said, displaying his right arm, “I am the only true right-winger in the party.”
