THERMIDOR WINS
Oamaru Club’s Meeting
PETERSHAM’S SUCCESS
Dominion Special Service
OAMARU, July 1
The Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting was held in dull and cold weather and attracted a fairly good attendance. The track was in good order but a shade on the slow side. The totalizator handled £12,772, compared with £10,862 in 1037, last year s meeting being abandoned because of snow, Culvcrden’s Steeples. Culverden won the steeplechase. He was kept busy to keep clear of Mount Vai in the run home. Redolent stopped badly after being in charge, at one stage and Red Terror beat him for third place. Comfortable Win. Lady Milne scored a comfortable win in the Oamaru Trot, in which Tiny Axworthy might have been more dangerous if more patiently handled. Top Hand broke and settled his chance early in the race. Flame Queen Wins. Flame Queen outstayed Combat in the Burnside Handicap, in which Withdrawal stopped after making the early running. Lockit drew the outside and had a bad run in the race. Close Finish. Petenshnni and Lady Leigh fought out a good finish in the Winter Handicap, and the former won by a very narrow margin. Sir Hugh would have been closer up with a stronger rider. Cerne Abbas did well to finish fourth. 'Thermidor.’s Late Run. The Grange Handicap was a good betting race, and Valantua and Settlement practically started even favourites. Pink Robo made the running till approaching the home turn, where Balmenter and Valantua closed on the leader. Valantua was in charge as they came to the distance, but stopped and blocked Lady Graceful, who was in behind him. Settlement hnd joined the leaders and appeared to be beating Balmenter when Thermidor, who had been last up to the home turn, put in a strong run and got up to win by a neck from Balmenter, who was half a length in front of Settlement. Then came Valantua and Lady Graceful, who had a bad run in the straight.
Waikaura Trot. The bracket Axspear 1 and Huguenot was made favourite for the Waikaura Trot, and after being well placed all the way the latter won well at the finish from Lady Milne, who had been penalized 12 yards for her win. The Wrecker Succeeds. Chief Lamn made a bold bid in the Farewell Handicap by leading till 100 yards from home, but then The Wrecker drew up and bent him. Flame Queen was third and Prince Ruenalf, after being slow away, was fourth and Royal Style next. ,
