HUNTING MINT TAKES MAIN HANDICAP

Dominion Special Service.

DANNEVIRKE, July 2. The Dannevirke Hunt Club's annual meeting was held on lhe Dannevirke racecourse ou Saturday in overcast, but fine weather. Though rain fell throughout the day in neighbouring districts it remained line at the course, and the racing was got off under favourable conditions. The track was easy, and inclined to cut up near the rails. Hunting enthusiasms throughout the province attended in good numbers and a large gathering of Weal supporters helped to make one of the best attendances, favouring this popular meeting for some veurs The totalizator handled fiiob 10/-, compared with £5560 last year, an increase of £2198/10/-. Most of the events were keenly con tested. There were very close finishes in the hurdles, won by Harbour Bar, and the Hack Cup, won by The Rinfopen flat race saw the hack, Mint, outstay the opposition, and m th Hunt Club Cup, the former hurdler, Blue Tiger, making his first appearance fol some mouths, scored a comfortable win from Master Turbine. W E Pine, who rode Power Chief at Auckland, broke a collarbone when Hilaria fell with him two fences from. home when leading with Master Turbine. m the Hunt Club Cup. and will thus nuss engagements at Wellington this week. J. Chaplin, rider of Te Morehu, in the hurdles, ricked his back so badly when the horse blundered at one. of' the fences, that it was thought inadvisable for him to accept further mounts during the day. Close Finish In Hurdles. Whakao made a bold attempt to lead all the way in the Oringi Hack Hurdles, and lost it through running about m tin last few strides, Harbour Bar coming along wide out. ou the track to get t money by a short half head. Haiboui Bar gave the best-exhibition of jumpinj among a very poor lot of maiden hurdlers Tigrcterre made up some ground in thi last half-mile to get third three length, from the first pair, and Golden Melod; was fourth. Master Hector and Libeta Star were next home. The last-name< was a false favourite. This was his firs start on the turf and he jumped poorly

Maiden to Cherry Picker. The Takapnu Novice Stakes was won bv the fourth favourite Cherry Picker, who carries the colours of Mr. Fr a "k Armstrong, president of the annev Hunt. Cherry Picker led all the way and was easily equal to coping witt tte challenges of CoTossal Chief, Eola and Split Second, winning by two len„tns. Cherry Picker has not raced much and when he.appeared a few months a S° Y as noted as a likely sort to .improve. Colesrbipf went a Rood race for secoll t a ’ movi?'g e «P to thitt on.the turn but he could not reach the winner. Fo‘ a as second to Cherry Picker until the distance, where she forfeited her place to Coloia? Chief. Split Second, a goodlooking two-year-old by Bulandshar, ha ing her first race, ran encouragingly. She made the turn into the straight wide dut and covered a lot of extra ground, then just failed by half a head to get third. Bronze Lass' and Inchkeith did. best o the others. Kaiwaka, the favourite, was never a possibility. Manteau showed early speed, but was sent back on tte turii and finished last. Blue Tiger’s Hunt Cup. ’ The Dannevirke Hunt Cu P . Steeple- ' chase was won by the favourite. Blue * Tisor, who was making his first a PP ea anee for more than twelve months. weakened in the final furlong and was four lengths away third, with Lacan coming on at the close for fourth. The other runners were never possibilities, Royal Toast being the only one to improve his position neariug the Jiome turn. An Overdue Success. The Ring, an odds-on favourite,- ecored * narrow victory from Seyfried in the Hack Cup after getting none the best of the running. She was last in the early running and twice when she commenced to move up to a better position she suffered a check. She was then taken round the field on the turn and took charge soon after turning for home. She appeared to have the race comfortably in hand half a furlong from the host when Seyfried lodged a strong claim on the outer and in a tense struggle The Ring held on long enough to win, though Seyfried was a winner a stride past the past. • The Ring has raced unluckily in recent starts, and her win was overdue. Richelieu Pearl ran Jier best race for some time to get third, but Guiding Light, after having every chance, could not do better than fourth. Twilight Song and Master Hector, the leaders round the turn, tired in the straight. Details Of The. Racing ORINGI HACK HURDLES, of £6O. Due mile and a half. t HARBOUR BAR, F. B.
