MEN’S BASKETBALL

Taxes No. 2 Beat Taxes No. 1

HOBOS IN THE LEAD

(By

Time Out.)

The ninth series of the men’s basketball competitions was continued in Wellington on ’Tuesday night, when a record attendance saw '• many interesting and exciting games. Chief interest was centred in the matches between the four leading teams, Hobos v. Kubs and Taxes No. 1 v. Taxes No. 2. By the defeat of Taxes No. 1, the Hobos club now assume the lead in the A grade, -closely followed by Taxes No. 2 and Kubs.

Taubmans 23, Training College 22. This game opened (he proceedings for the night, and an excellent contest resulted, Training College, who are undoubtedly the hard-luck team of the competition, going down to the vastly-im-proved Taubmans combination. Both teams made strenuous efforts in a glorious second spell, and the score alternated every minute. The final bell found Taubmans one point to the good. Scorers for Taubnians were, Torrington 14, and Carmichael 9; for Training College. Hunt 12, and Thurston 10.

Wool worths 13, Bristol 11. This game, though not producing firstgrade basketball, was hard and closely fought. Bristol appear to have lost all form, and Wool worths played probably their best game to date. Bristol, in the second spell, however, were reduced to a tlipee-man team by the four-foul rule, and Woolworths also lost one member. Scorers for Woolworths were, Shillson and Wiren 5 each, Hunt 2, and lunes 1; for Bristol, Dandy 6, Wilcox 3, McKenzie and Gillon 1 each.

Kubs 13, Hobos 13. When these two teams took the field in their bright uniforms, the galleries were packed to capacity. Though a good game was expected, it is doubtful if many expected the really excellent contest which did result. Both teams played impressive basketball, and many tactical moves were clearly evident. AU players on both sides were tuned to concert pitch, and it would be unfair to single out any member for special mention. The game throughout was played in the best of spirit and must have impressed many members of other sides looking on. The result—a draw —was perhaps the best verdict, as neither side deserved to lose a game which will be long remembered. The second round meeting between these teams should be another wonderful match. Scorers for Hobos were, Jones 6, Roberts 4, Hall 2, and Page 1; for Kubs, Burns 4, Lawson 3, McConchie and Fittes 2 each.

Mormons 16, State Advances 8. Mormons, without the services of their old skipper, Toronto, were not very impressive, but their win over the State Advances side was meritorious in that they were compelled to play fully twothirds of the game without the services of Dastrup, who had the misfortune to sprain an ankle. The game lacked the sparkle of some of the other games, but was nevertheless hard fought. Scorers for Mormons -were Crandell 11, Dastrup and Reid 2 each, ' Besiuger 1; for Advances Pocock 3, Bardsell and Gaelic 2 each, Cornwall 1.

Taxes Dept. No. 2 23, Taxes Dept. No. 1 13. The meeting between the two Taxes Department teams w-as another highlight of the evening, and resulted in a surprisingly easy win for the No. 2 side over their hitherto unbeaten opponents, thereby placing Holbos team at the top of the grade. After taking a few minutes to settle down, the No. 2 team quickly adopted their characteristic short-passing game, and soon carved great holes in the defence of the No. 1 team, which, with the exception of J. Cameron, failed lamentably. At no stage did the No. 1 team become balanced, and though it has been responsible for much better efforts, there is no doubt that championship laurels for this club must rest with the No. 2 team, every member of which gave of his best. It is well to mention that the action of this club individing its strength into two evenly-ibalanced sides in the interests of better basketball is both commendable and praise-worthy. Scorers for Taxes No. 2 were Lane 11, Beveridge 8, and Hatch ,4; for No. 1, Cameron 5, Ormiston 4, Howie and McKenzie 2 each.

Y.M. Gym. 23, Swimming Club 7. In the final game of the night the Gym. team scored an easy win over the Wellington Swimming Club team. The game, tlioiigh fairly fast and interesting, did not. produce scientific basketball, tjie display by the Gym. team being much the better. The Swimming Club teain did not seem to relish the rush tactics of their opponents, and consequently did not manage to gain their best form. Scorers for Gym. were Browne 10, Hanna 6, Boyd 4 and Merritt 3; for Swimming Club, Hatchweil 5 and Pennington 2. Second Round.

At the last meeting of the management committee of the association it wa.s decided, in view of the evenness'of the competitions, to have the top six teams in each grade play a further series of five matches, the leaders at the end to be declared tjie grade winners for 1939. The bottom six teams will continue to play each other.
