Reports Of Activities In June I ' ■; i • ■ , ' 1 X . • Ohariu. — ’Mrs. Muriel Lewis and Mrs. Andrae were guests of honour at the Ohariu Women's Institute's June meeting. ? Mrs. Bruce presided over a good attendance of‘members. Mrs. Lewis spoke of intimate aspects of life in China. After tea supplied by the hostesses of the month, Mesdames Best, Judd and Scadden, Mrs. Andrae, a new arrival in New Zealand who, before her marriage, was a journalist in Fleet Street, London, gave a- glimpse of her work, part of which was reporting for fashion shows. Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Andrae were presented with artistic posies, the work of Mrs. Mackay, one of the members, at the conclusion of the meeting. Pirionoa. — At the monthly meeting, Mrs. Spicer presided over a large gathering of members and visitors from Martinborough, Kahutara and Palmerston North Institutes. Mrs. W. Pope. Kahutara, gave an interesting demonstration of making lampshades.

“Old photographs’’ caused great amusement. this competition being won by Miss Scrimgour, with Mrs. H. Smith second. A competition for flax baskets was won by Miss Hanlon and Miss McKenzie,' who tied for first place. Afternoon tea was

served by the hostesses, Mesdames Marshall, D. Mclntosh and S. Mclntosh. Paraparaumu. — The weaving of Maori kits from flax formed the subject of an interesting demonstration by Mrs. Udy at the recent meeting. Mrs. Maclean and Mrs. Phipps gave talks on the exhibition recently held in Levin, specially telling of the Indian stall, which was in charge of Waikanae and Paraparaumu. Mrs. Hadfield, president, welcomed two new members and remarked on the good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy to all members of the Clunie family in their recent bereavement was passed. A competition for carrots resulted : Mrs. Chadwick, IMrs. Hardham, 2. Lindsay.— The monthly meeting was held at Mrs. Richard Holston’s residence. Mrs. Vincent, who presided, extended a welcome to Ihakara members. Mrs. G. Arcus gave an interesting talk on Scotland. .Mrs. Vincent thanked the hostess and presented her with a posy. A game competition was won by Miss J. Rolston, with Mrs. O. Mark second. A competition for best bloom' resulted: Mrs. Vincent 1, Mrs. Selbie 2. Trentham. — Community singing was a feature of the June meeting. Mrs. Kitchen presided over a good attendance and welcomed new members. Mrs. Oliver won a guessing competition, Mrs. Cooper won first prize for s plate of shortbread, and Miss Scott won the monthly cup for the best flower.

Newlands.—Mrs. Kettlewell presided and welcomed members and visitors, including Mrs. Williams, who demonstrated the making of “thrift slippers.” The de-

monstrator was presented with a posy at the close of her talk.

Competitions resulted : Bran biscuits, Mrs. Pritchard 1, Miss Cornwell 2; worked table centre, Miss Cornwell 1, Mrs. Stanley 2; best bloom, Mrs. Knight 1, Mrs. Brownell 2. Hastwell.— At the monthly meeting Mrs. Morris gave a report of the auuual council meeting held in Woodville. The president, Mrs. .Madsen, called on Mrs. B. Lozell, Nireaha, and Mrs. J. Payne, Rongokakako, to demonstrate cake icing

The competitions for the mouth resulted : Seniors (knitted men’s socks), Miss A'. Dick 1, Mrs. Halberg 2, Mrs. Madsen 3; juniors (knitted tea cosy), Miss 14. Madsen 1, Miss K. Larsen 2. Miss O. Halberg 1; best flower, Mrs.' Halberg 1, Miss Fredricksen 2, Miss O. Halberg 3. A game arranged by Mrs. Morris was won by Miss A. Dick. Mrs. Lozell aud Mrs. Payne were thanked for judging and for giving the demonstration. • Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. and Miss Thorby.
