WEIGHT-LIFTING

Novice Tournament

Those lifting in the monthly novice tournament at Webb's gymnasium on Thursday uight, showed the usual enthusiam, and particularly impressive was the lifting of C. Nelson. He showed improved form in compiling a total of 5501 b. on the three lifts, find should be a strong contender'in the forthcoming interprovincial match, Hawke's Bay v. Wellington, on July 8, in Be tone. Others improving 'on their last efforts were Probett, Arnold, Blair, and Sinclair. If these lifters progress in the same manner, a very interesting contest will take place, in the concluding stagets bf the Webb Cupi Among those present was Mr.’.H. Rmnpler, a former well-known New-Zealand weight-lifter, .who-has recently returned from ’ England, where he has been in touch with most of the administrative authorities of the sport. Mr. ( Rumpler. too; also made the persoiial acquaintance of some of the. World’s ' greatest physical culturists, and received instruction under the supervision of the famous W. A Pullum, bolder of many world’s records, some of which still remain unbroken. Mr. J. G. Paine, who recently visited New Zealand during a tour in which he was endeavouring to visit all the various institutions connected with physical culture in the Empire, was also a pupil of Mr.'Pullum. Mr. Paine considered that it was the training he received under this instructor which enabled him to reach Olympic Games standard, arid to be the first Englishman to compete in the weightlifting section of the games. Mr. Rumpler was much impressed with the methods of Mr. Pullum, and has much of interest to tell New Zealand weight-lifters'. Though he foupd training methods to be in advance of those.employed in New Zealand at the present time, it is his opinion thnt the style and technique of weight-lifting in New Zealand not only augurs well for the future, hut is in someeases equal to anything seen by the best performers in the Old Country. Mr. Rumpier was impressed with the advancement and growth of the sport in New Zealand during his absence, and was glad to inform the secretary of flic Now Zealnnd association., Mr. K, R, Mitchell, of the high regard that is felt for New Zealand'weight-lifting in England. The principal of the studio, Mr. Kenneth J. Webb, refenjed the contest, and Mr. Mitchell was present to select a Wellington team for the forthcoming internrovincinl contest. Detailed results were:—
