PIANIST AND COMPOSER
“Rachmaninoff,” by Watson Lyle (London: Reeves).
As a biographer of the famous pianist and composer, Sergei Rachmaninoff, the late Watson Lyle had the advantage of personal acquaintance to help him, and he was the author of all the programme notes written for Rachmaninoff’s concerts in England. He writes With sympathy, and has produced a book which provides most of the information necessary to an understanding of his subject. He Has, however, little to shy that is new. At the end of the book are valuable detailed lists of Rachmaninoff's compositions and of the gramophone recordings be has made, this being accompanied by an interesting commentary.
