VICTORIAN PERIOD PIECE

“A Great Adventure,” by Muriel Hine (London: Hodder and Stoughton).

Miss Muriel Hine has written a fine study, of family life in the ’eighties oT last century. The family is a middleclass one living in a country house, and the plot depends upon the efforts of the head of the family, goaded by the ambitions of his wife, to improve his fortune. There is excellent character, drawing, husband, wife and children all being limned with a most attractive faithfulness to life. As a Victorian period piece the book is outstanding, and all who like their fiction to be quietly moving with no forced sensationalism will delight in it.
