WOULD UNITED STATES FIGHT?
* Attitude Of People In European War ONLY MORAL SUPPORT THOUGHT LIKELY “The war debt is a very live question in the United States of America today, whether we like it or not,” said Mr. lan Matheson, who recently returned from a tour of the United States of America, fit a meeting of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association last night. Mi'. Matheson, who is a past president of the association, said he was convinced no president could lead the United States into military support of Great Britain at the outbreak of a European war. America might give moral support and supplies of munitions, but for cash only.
“It might well be, of course, that after war had broken out complications might arise which would cause them to flight, but a large section of the people are of a mind to avoid every possibility of becoming involved, and there are many outcries against President Roosevelt for such statements as he has already made,” said Mr. Matheson. “It has been carefully pointed out that even the remotest possibility of entanglement should be avoided most carefully. “Many Americans view the European disagreement with some lack of patience, saying, ‘Why can’t the various races live together in peace in Europe as the same races do in America.’ The answer is, of- course, that‘in the United States they ail speak a common language, and develop a common line of thought.”
