Depression Centred Near Hokitika Following is the weather report and the forecast for wind and seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today General situation: The depression is now centred not far from Hokitika, and appears to be moving southward. Barometers are still low west of the North Island, and across the South Tasman Sea. Forecast: — Winds : A temporary southerly change tonight in tlie southern portion of the South Island, otherwise south-westerly predominating in western districts and north-westerly in eastern districts. Force strong at times south of Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay, otherwise moderate.

Seas: (N.Z. waters) : Rough south of Farewell Spit and Akaroa, but decreasing later on the east coast. Elsewhere moderate, but rising somewhat about Cook Strait a'nd in the South Taranaki Bight. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong west to south winds. Seas moderate in the north, rather rough in the south. Barometric pressure fell slightly and the reading at 5 p.m. was 29.50 in.; 999 millibars. Christchurch: A steady drizzle fell all day in Christchurch, the total fall to 5 p.m. being 96 points. Thera was a strong north-easterly in the morning and light westerly wind in the afternoon. Maximum temperature, 51deg. The barometer fell slowly to 9,)7 millibars, where it was steady at. 5 p.m. Dunedin: Misty rain squalls, with moderate to strong north-east. wind. The day was cold ami the maximum temperature was 49deg. The barometer continued to fall steadily to 1001 millibars.
