EASTBOURNE’S WATER CONSUMPTION
500 Gallons A Day “DRASTIC ACTION WILL HAVE TO BE TAKEN’! “It is evident that drastic action will have to be taken to enforce the by-laws in respect of the use of water,” stated the town clerk-general manager, Mr. C. L. Bishop, to the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. He stated that the Lower Hutt Borough Council had advised that the water being used in Eastbourne was much above the maximum agreed on. From observations it was evident that much water was being used by hoses being allowed to run unattended. Sprinklers were also largely in use in contravention of the by-laws. He had advised the Lower Hutt Borough Council that steps would be taken to reduce the draw-off. Water was being used, without restriction or use of reason, from daylight. to dark, said the mayor. Mr. E. AV. Wise. The position was becoming dangerous because the Lower Hutt council had the right under the water supply agreement to review the position once the maximum was exceeded. He knew of one ease where a sprinkler was left operating continuously on an unoccupied section. There were residents, prout] of their gardens, who would -be prepared to pay for water. The average of 500 gallons a house daily, which was now being used, was absurdly high, said Cr. J. E. Rockstrow. Cr. M. E. Magill said that whatever was done to remedy the position the garden lovers of the borough should not be discouraged or penalized. Eastbourne had a horticultural society with a membership of which it should be proud. On Cr. Macandrew’s motion it was decider! to recommend that a charge be made for extraordinary supply, this to be gone into by the town clerk, and the by-law regarding the watering of gardens enforced.
