DRIVE TO EXPAND TRADE

British Export And Credits Guarantee Fund (British Official Wireless.) (Received February 3, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY', February 2. The House of Commons today gave a second reading to the Bill providing for the taking of a census of production and finished the committee stage of the Bill extending the power of the Board of Trade to give a guarantee up to a maximum of £75,000,000 instead of £50,000,000 as at present, for establishing or encouraging overseas trade.

Speaking in the debate, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Overseas Trade, Mr. R. S. Hudson, mentioned that the new increase in capital committments of the export and credits guarantee fund since the Bill was introduced last December was £1,500.000. At that time there had been a balance of about £6,000,000 available under the old maximum.

How long the new maximum would suffice depended on the degree to which industries availed themselves of these facilities. He reminded the .House that his department was urging upon the ex-, port industries (he desirability of organizing themselves to meet modern conditions in world markets.
