PUBLICITY HOAX ENDS TRAGICALLY
Little Girl Suffocated WINNIPEG, January 26. A publicity stunt designed to avert a divorce but which cost the life of his six-year-old daughter was revealed with: the arrest of Stephen Eiler, an unemployed carpenter, today. From his hotel Eiler telephoned the police and said that he feared trouble at his house because the telephone was not answered. The police found the child suffocated by a towel which was apparently intended merely to gag her.
In an adjoining room the housekeeper, Catherine Kyrhik, aged 24, was found bound and gagged. She told the police that she was seized by a strange man who was searching the home for papers.
Under questioning she finally confessed that Eiler had planned the whole hoax, hoping that the resultant publicity would induce his estranged wife to abandon divorce proceedings and return.
