U.S. DEFENCES IN THE PACIFIC
Need For Fortifying Guam (Received January 27, 6.30 p.in.) WASHINGTON, January 27. Admiral Hepburn, testifying before the committee set up to study the strategical development of Guam Island,’said that the conversion of Guam into an advanced fleet base, as well as a submarine and air depot, would settle the whole question of the American position in the Pacific. One questioner asked, if Guam were so equipped, would it not be of greater value to Singapore and Australia than for the defence of the United States, pointing out that Guam was 2600 miles from Singapore, 1300 from Australia, but 3800 from Hawaii. Admiral Hepburn expressed the contrary opinion.
