Shareholders’ Director MR. A. E. MABIN ELECTED BY LARGE MAJORITY Mr. A. E. Mabin, Wellington, a director and manager of Levin and Co., Ltd., has been elected a shareholders’ director of the Bank of New Zealand to fill the vacancy on the board caused by the death of the late Mr. William Watson. The count of shareholders’ votes was completed yesterday, the result being reported as follows: — Votes. A. E. Mabin (Wellington) ... 701,284 Norton Francis (Christchurch) 448,511 M. O. Barnett (.Wellington) .. 272,349 The other shareholders’ representative on the board of' directors of the Bank of New Zealand is Mr. Richard W. Gibbs. Mr. Mabin, who is a director and manager of Levin and Co., Ltd., Wellington, is one of the leading authorities in the New Zealand wool trade, with which he has been closely connected for more than 48 years. He joined the firm of Levin and Company in 1888, and became manager of the hemp and wool department. Mr. Mabin was for a number of years pfesident of the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association, but resigned in 1914 when leaving for England. Since his return he has been vice-president on several occasions, and he was again elected president in 1931.
During the war period Mr. Mabin was .the representative of the New Zealand Government in the negotiations with 8.A.W.R.A., and it was upon his recommendation that the limitation of offerings of wool was followed in this Dominion, a practice which has been continued ever since under the control of the New Zealand Wool Committee, of which Mr. Mabin was a member till 1926, when he resigned. Upon tendering his resignation the Minister of Agriculture wrote: “Your knowledge of the wool business in all its aspects and the thorough impartiality you have shown throughout your association with the committee. . ; . I regret exceedingly that the Dominion will suffer a distinct loss in no longer having your services available.” The Prime Minister, the late Mr. W. F. Massey,,associated himself with the thanks of ’the Government to Mr. Mabin.
Mr. Mabin is also chairman of directors of Sharland and Company, Ltd., and a director of the Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd.
