WELLINGTON STUDENT WINS HIGH HONOUR

Mechanical Engineering Prize A young New Zealander, Mr. Alexander Dennistoun-Wood, Wellington, has been awarded a Studentship Examination Prize by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London. The award was made in recognition of the excellent standard of his marks. It is believed this is the first time such an award has beeu made to a student in New Zealand.

Notification was received recently from the institution that Mr. Dennistoun-Wood had been successful in passing the studentship examination, as well as Part II of Section A of the associate membership examination, held last October. Such was the standard of his marks that the institution decided to award him a prize, to take the form of books or instruments suitably inscribed. He was educated in ' Wellesley College, Wellington, where he was dux, and passed the university entrance examination at the age of 14. He is at present a student taking evening classes in the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, and is apprenticed to the engineering department of New Zealand Motor Bodies, Limited, Petone. Ho is the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Dennistoun-Wood, grandson of the late Hon. J. Dennistoun-Wood, K.C., Tasmania, and great-nephew of Dr. C. Lemon, Wellington, who first generated electricity in New Zealand, am) played a prominent part in designing and laying the Cook Strait cables.
