WATERFRONT BUSY
Shortage Of Labour MANY SHIPS IN PORT This week Ims been very busy on the Wellington waterfront. Yesterday there was a shortage of labour on the wharves and today, with five big ships due, the shortage will be more acute. in port yesterday were nine overseas liners and intercolonial vessels, as well as a large number of-coasters. Several vessels were short of labour and the City of Manchester, which arrived late in the morning from Auckland to discharge New York cargo, remained idle all day, no labour being available. This morning, the Shaw, Savill liner Tamaroa is due from London, the same company’s Maimoa from Lyttelton to load, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor-ship Orari from Wanganui to load, the Union Company’s Matua from Auckland with fruit from the Islands, and the same company’s Kaikorai from Newcastle and Sydney. About 10 coastal vessels are also due. In consequence the shortage of labour will lie acute and a number of vessels will be unable to obtain a full complement of waterside workers. Several will be unable to obtain any labour at all. '
