PICTURES FOR 1939
United Artists’ Coming Attractions IMPOSING NAMES For 20 years United Artists have fostered the independent production of big outstanding motion pictures, and now after that period they are, more firmly established than ever. No fewer than seven independent producers, recognized among the foremost in the industry, will be producing picture.-, during the coming season to supply the public with high-quality productions. | The producers now associated with United Artists for the coming year are as follows: —Samuel Goldwyn, Alexander Korda-London Films, David O. Selzniek, Walter Wanger, Edward Small, Hal Roach, and W. F. Keller. Twenty-six pielures are to be produced nt u total cost of 30.W0.000 dollars. These pictures will be east with glamorous star favourites as well as intriguing personalities who should win immediate approval. The first picture scheduled for the new year is to come from Samuel Gvldwyn, who has just celebrated his twenty-fifth year of picture producing. The picture is "The Cowboy and the Lady,” starring Gary Cooper and Merle Oberon. Other Goldwyn pictures that will be seen are “The Daring Age.” starring the renowned violinist Jascha Heifetz, Adolphe Menjou, Sigrid Gurie and Joel McCrea. The story by 1. A. R. Wylie is a daring and dramaticone of today’s youth lost in a world of turmoil. Emily Bronte's beloved romance "Wuthering Heights,” with Merle Oberon and an exciting adventure story, “The Last Frontier,” with Gary Cooper, are other Goldwyn pictures that, will be seen during the year. Alexander Korda, the producer of London Filins productions, whose pictures always have a distinctive quality because of his original and refreshing ideas, will produce six pictures, half of them in technicqlour. The pictures are "Prison Without Bars,” starring Korda’s newest screen discovery, Corinne Luchaire, acclaimed as an actress of unlimited talents and rare beauty; Edna Best and Barry K. Barnes arc also in the cast; the A. E. W. Mason story, “Four Feathers,’’ in tecbnieolour, with Ralph Richardson; “The Thief of Bagdad,” in technicolour, starring the fascinating Indian boy, Sabu; "Over tbs Boon,’’ in teebnicolour, with Merle Oberon, from an original story by Robert E. Sherwood; “The First and the Last,” a John Galsworthy story with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier; and “Conquest of the Air.”
A producer who can always be depended on, David O. Selzniek, who made “The Prisoner of Zenda,” “A Star is Born,” and a score of other outstanding pictures, is providing “The Young in Heart,” with Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks, jun., Paulette Goddard, Roland Young and Billie Burke. It is said to be one of the most delightful comedies for some years. Selzniek is also making another entitled "Made for Each Other,” with Carole Lombard h.s the star.
Walter Wanger is producing four pictures, “Trade Winds,” with Fredrie March and Joan Beunett; “Stage Coach,” “Winter Carnival,” and “The Illusionist.”
Edward Small, the producer of “The Count of Monte Cristo,” is providing “The Mau in the Iron. Mask,” "The Duke of West Point,” “King of the Turf,” "South of Pago Pago,” and “Kit Carson, Avenger.” It is also announced that Hal Roach, generally regarded as Hollywood's leading producer of oul.standing comedies such as “Topper,” and "Merrily We Live,” will produce four pictures for release through United Artists during the year. They are "Topper Takes a Trip,” "Captain Midnight,” "Water Gipsies,” and a Hartly aud Langdon comedy. Important names stud the star list .of Hai Roach productions— Fredrie March, Constance Bennett, Margaret Sullavau, Virginia Bruce, and Jean Arthur are some of them. For the coming season United Artists will distribute a new series of very beautiful short subjects in technicolour entitled "World Windows.” The first of the series is "The Eternal Fire,” which is one of the short subjects supporting "The Cowboy and the' Lady,” AU the pictures mentioned will be released in the theatres controlled throughout the Dominion by Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., under a contract recently made with the distributors.
