PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET

Wellington Team Selected J. K. LAMASON & BROWNE INCLUDED Mr A W. Duncan, sole selector, has chosen the following team to represent Wellington against Auckland in th Plunket Shield cricket match, which is to begin in Auckland on February 3. E. W. Tindill (Midland). J. R Sheffield (University). J. Ell (Wellington), J. A. Ongley (University), W. G. Rainbird (Wellington College Old'Boys), . . J. R. Lamason (Wellington Colle ß e Old Boys), D S Wilson (Kilbirnie), J.’Ashenden (Kilbirnie), M. Browne (Karori), F L Pritchard (Manawatti), N. Gallichan (Manawatu), T. A. Harpur (University), twelfth man. Mr. E. C. Wlren. a member of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association, will be the manager of the team. Of the team which represented Wellington against Canterbury at the New Year H. F. Rice ' (Kilbirnie) and J. McKeown (Institute) have been dropped, and their places have been filled by J. R. Lamason and M. Browne.

COMMENT ON SELECTIONS (By Bobwood. ) Sheffield is lucky to have retained ■his place, as his scores in Plunket Shield matches this season have been, 18 against tago, and 9 and 38 againsCanterbury. In club matches he has had six innings, one not out, for 141 runs, giving him an average .of -B—o. J. R. Lamason is also fortunate to be selected, as his form this season does not justify inclusion in the representative team. The selector, no doubt, included him in the hope that he would strike form in Auckland. In one way, however, he will strengthen the team, and that is as a fieldsman. No cricketer in the Dominion can cover as much ground at as fast a pace, or has a safer pair of bands than Jack Lamason. He can also take a turn at the bowling crease. . No fault can be found with the inclusion of M. Browne of the Karori Club. He did so well in the Plunket ■Shield match against Otago in Dunedin in the 1937-38 season that he deserved to be given another chance this year. Browne is a good slow righthand spin bowler, and that he can also bat effectively he proved by hitting up 135 for Karori against University a fortnight ago. The team would have been strengthened by the inclusion of C. K. Parsloe (Kilbirnie) and E. McLeod (Hutt) in place of Sheffield and J. It. Lamason. AUCKLAND TEAM CHOSEN By Telegraph —Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 25.
