Auckland Swimming Titles

AUCKLAND, January 19.

Australian and New Zealand records for 400 metres backstroke were low--ered at the Auckland championship swimming carnival tonight by P. E. Mathleson. His time was 5.25 1-5, 9 2-5 faster than his own- Dominion record and 22 2-5 faster than the Australian record of P. Oliver, Perth. A New Zealand senior women’s record for 100 metres backstroke was established by the 17-yea.r-old Southland girl Joyce Macdonald, who lowered Ena Stockley’s record, which had stood for 10 years, from 84 2-5 to 82. MLss AVinnie Dunn, Dunedin, swam 400 metres breaststroke in 7.11, breaking G. Pidgeon’s record by 45 1-5. Miss K. Grey did 220 yards freestyle in 2.48 1-5, l-ssec. slower than the New Zealand record of I. Purdie, Otago. The 100 yards men’s freestyle championship resulted: P. Hanan, 1; A. Pascoe, 2; N. Crump, 3. Time, 55 4-5. 440yds. men’s championship: A. Pascoe, 1; P. E. Mathleson, 2; V. Capper, 3 Time, 5.16 1-5. • .
