NEW BEASTS FOR ZOO

The new animals for the Wellington Zoo were unloaded yesterday from the steamer Hauraki, ami taken up to the zoo. The two bison were released in the evening in the paddock provided for them, on the sunny hillside above the sea-lioli pond. Tlie elk will be set loose today or Monday in an adjoining pen The bison, which belong to tlie species of buffalo which once ranged in vast herds across the whole central and northern portions of North America and were hunted by tlie Indian and the wolf, are small, stockily-built, shaggy beasts, in spite of Hie death’s beads painted on tlie wooden cages in which tliey came across Hie Pacific, they are apparently tinier ami docile. Their enclosure is strongly nelted, however. There are few herds of American bison outside North America, the two most important being at Wbipsnade, ami Hie Duke iff Bedford's park at Woburn Abbey.
