CLAIMS TO NEW LAND IN ANTARCTIC

U.S. Interest In Ellsworth’s Discovery /

(Received January 13, 10.45 p.m.)

NEW YORK, January ,13.

While indicating his interest in the claim by the explorer Lincoln Ellsworth on behalf of the United States to 80.000 square miles of new territory in the Antarctic, the Secretary of State. Mr. Cordell Hull, said he was not. prepared to comment yet, says the Washington correspondent of the “New York Times.”

Tlie question requires considerable study before officials will be in a position to say anything regarding the American attitude. It may, however, well enter as a factor in the rival claims of the Governments to territory in the Bolar regions for possible use as aeroplane bases.

It is thought that, when the question of the sovereignty of the various Pacific islands is eelared up, the United States plans to turn the consideration of sovereignty to Antarctica, where it is felt that a long line of discoveries has laid u broad basis for the assertion of American claims.
