Spectacular Fire Near
Timaru
By Telegraph—Press Association,
TIMARU, December 30.
Nearly 70 years old, the Luxmoore homestead, just north of Timaru, was totally destroyed by a spectacular fire in the early hours of this morning. It was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Fahey, but the former was away on holiday. Mrs. Fahey was at home with her two /children and sister. The noise of the tire awoke Mrs. Fahey soon after 3 o’clock. She’immediately called the Timaru Fire Brigade, which left for the scene at once. By the time it arrived the centre of the roof had fallen in and, fanned by a strong wind, the flames soon made the saving of the house impossible. It was all the brigade could do to save some of the outhouses. One dressing table was brought out intact and much valuable furniture was lost.
The insurance figures are not avail able.
The house was associated with early South Canterbury history, being built on the estate of Mr. P. B. Luxmoore, an early settler from England.
