SOUTHLAND NOTES

Likely Lightweights For Wyndham Cup

Dominion Special Service.

INVERCARGILL, December 28. Disband is ineligible for the Trial Plate at Wyndham, but he is eligible for the New Year Handicap at the Southland meeting, which is for horses that had not won a race to the value of £o() at the time .of nomination. > Neither Mona’s Song nor 1 oxlove was taken to the Dunedin meeting because of the state of the tracks. Spanish Lad and Irish Fling both ma.de the trip, but neither was produced. R. E. McLellan returned with-Jedburgh, Doubleack, jlilford and ’Waitoru after the first day s racing, and Wild Career and Ardmayle were not asked to race on the second day. Western Song schooled over four flights of hurdles this morning and gave a first-class exhibition. He has never been in better order and will be one of the favourites for the hurdle event at the Southland meeting. Formerly a sprinter, Western Song now stays on vyell. Alma’s name appeared as an acceptor for the Wyndham Cup, but she did not pay up. Lord Hawke should be ineluded in the Trial Plate, and Colonel Rouge should be out of the New Year CH-P-Wingatui form adds more than orainary interest to the Wyndham Cup, but at this stage three lightweights iu Norseman, Auctor and Mona’s Song are being most discussed. Auctor raced over a mile and a quarter when he finished second to Rustem in the Otaio Plate in 2.6 2-o. Auctor was produced only on the final day at Wingatui, where he was unplaced in'the Farewell Handicap, over ten furlongs and a half, with 9.4. He lost no friends., however, by this showing, as he was one of the leaders to the top of the straight and he will appreciate his drop of 301 b. in the Wyndham race. Norseman won over a mile and is just the type to run out a solid ten fftrlongs. He is right at the top of his form. Mona’s Song was not produced at Wingatui. but she is in forward order and on a firm track will be one of the hardest to beat. Top Row, also a winner at Wingatui. will be an interesting runner over the journey, and he is likfly to stay on better than most. Second Innings is another Dunedin winner engaged. At this stage the lightweight trio will be in most favour, with preference for Auctor.
